Biography of Mary Livermore, who first came into prominence as a result of her nursing efforts during the Civil War, her memoir of that period (My Story of the war) and later was the highest paid lecturer in the U.S., as she took up the cause of women's suffrage. Unfortunately before her death she destroyed the majority of her personal papers. Her biographer had to rely on her surviving writings; ie letters she sent to friends and relative, articles she wrote for newspapers, copies of her speeches, etc. This is the first available biography of Liverrmore, scholarly and well written.
