An Accidental Family is the debut title from Ami Weaver. After reading it, I find myself greatly looking forward to seeing her writing as she becomes more seasoned.

Lainey came from a privileged family, but after the breakup of a disastrous marriage approved by her parents, she decides she will make her own decisions from then on. She opens a flower shop, and lives in a modest apartment in the same building. We find Lainey reeling when she finds out she’s pregnant after a one-night hookup with the quarterback of her high school at her reunion. For many reasons which are revealed throughout the book, she’s left to raise the baby on her own. Read More… (mehr)

Very emotional book. Seven years ago a tragedy tore apart Mack and Darcy's marriage. Unable to explain her feelings, Darcy filed for divorce and fled to Chicago. Now she's back for a short time, to help her aunt and uncle with their Christmas tree farm, not knowing that Mack has been helping too. Seeing him again brings all the pain and guilt back, but she's committed to staying.

Mack had no idea Darcy was coming back until his brother told him he had seen her. He's tried to convince himself that he's moved on and gotten over the devastation of her leaving, but one look proves him wrong. His heart starts pushing to try again, but his head knows that she's planning to leave again. Why put himself through all that pain again?

Mack and Darcy had married because she was pregnant and Mack wanted to do the right thing. There was no doubt that he loved her and was sure that their lives together would be great. But when a terrible accident caused her to lose the baby, everything fell apart. Darcy shut him out and Mack didn't know how to reach her. She filed for divorce, left for Chicago, and hadn't been back since. Now they have to find a way to work together without hurting each other more.

The attraction between Mack and Darcy is even hotter than it was before. Put the two of them in the same room and the sparks really begin to fly. However, they still aren't able to talk about their past and what went wrong. I ached for Mack and how he's still bewildered about why she left. I also hurt for Darcy, who is carrying a tremendous amount of guilt over what happened and how she dealt with it. Their youth had contributed to their inability to actually talk to each other, and even now they both avoid having the hard conversations.

It isn't long before the attraction gets the better of them. That opens a tiny crack in the door between them, and they tentatively start getting to know the people they are now. It becomes obvious that they are falling for each other all over again, but until they can be honest about those feelings, it can only end in heartbreak. Mack is still pretty clueless until his mom says something that makes him look at their past from a different angle. Darcy also realizes that until she can make Mack understand why she had left, nothing is going to change. The satisfaction of seeing them finally face those demons and talk about them made the ending just right.

Besides her feelings for Mack and what had happened in the past, Darcy also has to deal with her feelings about what is going on with the tree farm. By staying away for so long, she lost touch with her connection to the land. Her reactions to what is going to happen reinforce the truth about her life in Chicago, and force her to decide what she really wants to do. Of course, there was really no doubt about what it was going to be, but her journey to get there was a painful one. I loved what she decided.

I also loved seeing the softer side of Mack as he worked his veterinarian magic with the various animals. There was no way that Darcy was going to be able to resist a man who treated animals the way that he did. I hope that a future book includes what happens to the two dogs that were such a big part of the book.

This was a very good book with some intense emotions. I really liked Maggie, but she did make a really big mistake at the very beginning. A year later she is still reeling from revelations that came out at her father's death. He had another daughter that he hadn't told his family about. That daughter is dead and Maggie is devastated over the fact she'd never get to know her. When she finds out that her sister had a young son and that his father was looking for a nanny, she applied. All she wanted was a chance to get to know him and she was afraid she'd be rejected if she simply asked. Being attracted to Cody's father was not in her plan at all. She had fallen in love with and married her boss once before, and been burned in the process. No matter what she did, her feelings for Josh just kept getting stronger. She knew she had to tell him who she was, but she was so afraid of what would happen when she did that she kept putting it off. When the truth finally came out the results were just as devastating as she expected. Her unhappiness was really heartbreaking. I loved seeing how great Maggie was with Cody. There was such a wonderful connection between them it was easy to see how good a mom Maggie would be.

Josh has been dealing with a boatload of guilt since Lucy's death. They had married because she got pregnant with Cody, but the marriage itself ended up being pretty miserable. Josh blamed himself for not being there for her because of the long hours he worked as a doctor. They had also had a big fight just before she drove off and got in an accident. Now Josh is trying to be dad and mom to Cody after promising Lucy Cody would be his priority. Josh has cut out just about anything in his life that was just for him, including the idea of dating or falling for another woman. He tries to protect himself and Cody from another loss like that. When Maggie applies for the nanny job he is surprised by her youth but accepts her experience as a teacher. It doesn't take long for him to see that she fits into their lives like she's always belonged there. His attraction to her scares him because he doesn't want to risk another relationship. The more time they spend together the deeper his feelings grow, even though he won't admit to them. Finding out who she is causes a deep sense of betrayal in him that he finds hard to deal with. I loved seeing the way that his mother read him the riot act to make him see sense. The ending was excellent and the epilogue was a nice finish to the story.

Very good book. Callie has managed to put her life back together after the death of her firefighter husband. Her sons are the most important things in her life and she is doing everything she can to make sure they are safe. When her husband's best friend moves in across the street, things begin to change. Being around him begins to wake feelings in her that she never expected to feel again, and she's not comfortable with that. Plus he runs a high adventure company which puts him in a high risk category she has sworn to avoid. For the most part I really liked Callie. She's pulled herself together and is slowly getting on with her life. Her reactions to Matt scare her and she pushes him away as hard as she can. But that doesn't hold up as she finds him getting involved with her sons and coming to her rescue during a storm. She worries about what will happen if the boys get close to him and then he leaves. She has gone a bit overboard in trying to protect her boys from risk and gets defensive when she gets called on it by Matt and others. Her growing love for Matt is something she doesn't want to admit to herself especially with her blind spot concerning his work. Watching her work through everything was satisfying and felt very realistic.

I loved Matt. He was surprised to find that he had moved in across from Callie. She'd always appealed to him but as his best friend's wife he had buried those feelings deep. Now Jason's no longer there, but even thinking about Callie that way makes him feel very guilty. I love the way that he has so much fun with Callie's kids. It shows that he has the potential to be a great father even though he doesn't think that's possible for him. I loved the way he had Callie and the kids stay at his house when hers was storm damaged. It was great seeing the way that having them there changed his life so much. I also liked the way that he saw Callie's issues and tried so hard to show her what she was missing. I loved the story behind his dog Aldo and how it contributed to the man that Matt is.
