This is a book about, well, baseball's greatest pennant races; the closest, most controversial, best comebacks, etc. Discussed races include, among others, the 1908 National League (NL) race between the New York Giants and Chicago Cubs; the 1915 Federal League race between the Chicago Whales and the St Louis Terriers, which the Whales won by one percentage point, because of the absence of a rule requiring that games affecting the pennant race that are rained out, be made up; the 1942 NL race between the St. Louis Cardinals (106-48) and Brooklyn Dodgers (104-50) in which the Dodgers won the most games of any team not to make the postseason; the 1993 NL West race between the Atlanta Braves (104-58) and San Francisco Giants (103-59), which may have prompted Major League Baseball to institute the wild card system; and the races decided by a postseason playoff (1948 Indians-Tigers; 1951 Giants-Dodgers; 1978 Yankees-Red Sox; 1980 Astros-Dodgers; 2007 Rockies-Padres).
