Educated Children During the Cultural Revolution

Having read many memoirs and books about the Cultural Revolution, all the stories in this book ring true. They are full of emotional turmoil and upheaval.

Wen wrote these stories by translating interviews with 14 people who were children during the Cultural Revolution. Nearly all of the stories are come from fellow writers or editors. While their stories are raw and emotionally difficult to comprehend, they are taken from a small slice of intelligentsia in China. Most of the stories tell about parents who were also writers being sent to the countryside to do backbreaking labor while children remained in the cities, dealing with their own feelings of guilt and shame for being the children of "traitors."

Other authors, like Feng Jicai, Ma Bo, Gao Yuan, and many, many others, give accounts from other "types" of people involved in the Cultural Revolution. The stories in "The Red Mirror" are harsh, but many of them are tame compared to the suffering in some of the other memoirs.

Wen's writing is clear and very easy to read. It is to the point, offering very few details on the political and social movements that were creating the Cultural Revolution.

For anyone looking for personal information about the Cultural Revolution from the eyes of urban, educated children, this book will be very helpful.

With a focus on intellectual families, this book provides a collective account of the tragic personal impacts imposed on children who grew up during the Chinese Cultural Revolution period (1966-1976). Now in their adulthood, these "children of China's Cultural Revolution" tell their memories of the dark period, which are included in this book with a clear-headed analysis of how those hard times shaped the minds of the teenage boys (i.e., a high level of cynicism among them).
