Interesting book about Ole Romer, a Danish scientist that measured the speed of light in 1676. Book layout is graphic-novel like, but often more cartoonish (in layout and in the way it treats it's subject matter) in style and voice.

Despite not really liking the style, and actively disliking the typesetting and lettering (which I feel looks amateur and childish), I found this book to be fascinating and full of great information.

Back matter includes and afterword that addresses ideas of physics and relativity, an epilogue of Romer's life, and a brief timeline of pertinent discoveries.… (mehr)

I very much enjoyed this book, and there was so much good content in it! It tells the story of Danish scientist, Ole Romer who discovered that light travels at a certain speed by studying the orbit of one of Jupiter's moons. It has really great illustrations in a graphic novel style, and along with the narrative of Romer, it includes explanations that show distances between Earth and other planets, the process that lead to Romer's discovery, and conceptualizes the speed of light using an example that a bullet travels 100,000x faster than a snail, and light travels 100,000x faster than a bullet. This book would be a great tool to conceptualize the scale of our solar system, as well as to introduce ideas about how light travels.… (mehr)

This book talks about light and how it first was discovered so many years ago by a variety of different people. The book introduces people that have made discoveries about light to express their findings in a way that students can understand when reading. The author gives history about the different people who contributed to the discovery of light and what brought to the table of discovery. Throughout the book, the author tells a story about each of the people making it more entertaining to read. The author describes the people's childhood and how they contributed to the discoveries. It gives more context to the ideas to enhance students understanding. Doing this in the classroom, I would have the students take one of the discoveries and test it. It would them an opportunity to explore and find out more for themselves.… (mehr)

Kids who know their Hondas from their Toyotas will be intrigued to learn about the man behind Honda Motor Company. This accessible story (with a bit of mechanical science) describes Saichiro Honda's dreams as a boy, his passion for cars, and the hard work that led to worldwide success.
