This is a crime novel, but it's also literary fiction. It mixes a murder investigation in the present day with events that happened between the end of the Miners'Strike and the Battle of the Beanfield in 1985. It explores the nature of police brutality and the way in which the police close ranks when they feel the need to protect 'their own'. While this Another Fool in the Balkans was not as agonizingly long as Rebecca West's book, it was nearly as boring. The author clearly explained that he wasn't going to explore the entire Balkans region; however, I feel that he unfairly gives the region too much of a Serb/Croat flavour and totally discounts Bosnia.

Highly recommended, although one needs some familiarity with Balkan history to appreciate the book.… (mehr)
