In a story based on real events, Jewish teenagers meet aboard the MS St. Francis as it takes them and their families away from the terror of Nazi Germany to the freedom that awaits them in far-o Cuba.

One of my all-time favourite comfort reads. I love Hannah and Chris and I love all horse books that are written by people who actually know horses and riding.

I'm giving this one less star than the first because of the utter frustration I feel watching Hannah doubt herself and destroy her relationship with Chris BUT it's still fantastically written.

First read: I want to know what happens with Hannah! This sucks.*

Second read: Ok, this is just as good as the previous two, I just have to survive without HannahxChris for a lil bit.

This is a bit more of the traditional morality message than the previous two - theft and sleeping with abusive men is bad, m'kay? - but it doesn't feel simple or preachy. Zoe's struggles felt real; there was no quick fix even after she was diagnosed as bipolar and got medication. She still backslid and made bad decisions BUT she wasn't shown as irredeemable because of it. The horses and riding scenes are still fantastic.

*not really but y'know
