This study makes use of the large quantity of little-used manuscript sources from the 17th century. It examines various facets of rural life and society in a key period which witnessed a transition from medieval to more modern conditions. It looks at how agriculture varied throughout Scotland, how it developed during the century or so before the Union of 1707 and how these developments prepared the way for the 18th century Improvers.
