Kurzbiographie
Billy Wilder was born Samuel Wilder in Sucha, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His mother had spent several years in the USA in her youth and is said to have nicknamed her son "Billy" because of her fascination with Buffalo Bill. Wilder briefly studied law in Vienna, originally intending to become a lawyer, before abandoning that career for journalism. He wrote for a Viennese newspaper, producing crime and sports stories and interviews. In 1926, he took a publicity job in Berlin with the American jazz bandleader Paul Whiteman. He stayed on in Berlin writing for the city’s largest tabloid newspaper. In 1929, he broke into films as a screenwriter, and wrote scripts for numerous German films until the Nazis came to power in 1933. He left for Paris, then emigrated to the USA. Although he did not speak English when he arrived in Hollywood in 1934, Wilder was a fast learner, and thanks to friends such as Peter Lorre, with whom he shared an apartment, he was quickly able to start working in American films. In 1938, he began a fruitful writing partnership with Charles Brackett. They evolved into a producer-director team in 1942, with Wilder directing, and turned out box office hits such as Five Graves to Cairo (1943), The Lost Weekend (1945), and Sunset Boulevard (1950), winning several Academy Awards along the way. After the partnership dissolved, Wilder's self-produced films were more caustic and cynical, though he also produced successful, classic comedies such as Some Like It Hot (1959) and The Apartment (1960). He retired in 1981.

Rezensionen

In 1945, the Academy Award for BP went to Going My Way, a box office smash and sentimental choice that's aged as well as cheese left out in the sun. A superior choice: Billy Wilder's superb dark noir Double Indemnity.

The casting of Gloria Swanson and Erich von Stroheim who both had careers in silent movies, invests the events depicted with a great deal of realism as do the cameos in which Cecil B DeMille, Hedda Hopper, Buster Keaton and others are featured. Shots of Paramount studios and Schwab's Drugstore and the inclusion of an excerpt from "Queen Kelly" (1929) in which Swanson starred and von Stroheim directed also blur the lines between fiction and reality and add greater authenticity to the whole production.… (mehr)

A delightful film, black and white, but very engaging. Audrey Hepburn stars in the title role as a young woman in love with her father's boss's son, sent away to Paris for a couple of years.

A good pace, some unexpected humour, and some excellent dialogue, We were surprised at how much we liked this understated classic. There was even a short 'extra' giving a bit of extra information about the film.

Definitely recommended if you like this kind of thing.

A rather sordid premise to a well-written and well-made film, even if the 1960s style acting is a bit overdone in places. Shirley MacLaine is excellent as the young and attractive elevator operator, Fran; Jack Lemmon is also good as the kind but very ambitious CC Baxter, who lends his New York apartment out to management at his office for extra-marital trysts.

Most of the discussion of what goes on is couched in euphemisms, and there's no nudity or anything explicit, which is probably why the rating is only PG. But it's not at all appropriate for children or younger teens, in my view. However, for older teens or adults who like black-and-white films of this era, with some satire and light-hearted moments as well as some very tense ones, it has a good pace, and won several Oscars.
