This is the true story of the author’s grandmother, told in mostly her own words. She was born in Missouri, but her father wanted more for them and moved the family to Kansas by covered wagon. After a drought, they moved on to Oklahoma where they lived for awhile in an oil Boomtown. When they had saved enough, the family moved back to Missouri where Grandma Essie stayed and never left again.

This book is a historical fiction book about a family moving out west. The art in the book is illustrations done with pastels. The book is about a family who moves out west and all the struggles they had to go through to get there. The reading level is fourth or fitfth grade because it is pretty long. The curricular connction is history, and it would be good to read when talking aboout the settlers moving west in the 1800's.
