The writing is simple and repetitive and could probably be improved quite a bit with a thorough editing pass.
The premise is completely absurd and while it tries to sell itself as sci-fi it's entirely fantasy.
But with LitRPG you typically just have to roll with this stuff but even within the realm of LitRPG things become more and more far-fetched. The book failed to convince me that the world is built from coherent and consistent parts which the author didn't just make up on the spot by guess and by gosh which is usually an essential part of the LitRPG genre.
My biggest problem with this story is how the author exploits the LitRPG element as a convenient shortcut to bypass any and all problems that get in his way. It's basically mainly used as an excuse to avoid proper world-building and to get rid of inconsistencies.
I like the basic concept of LitRPG but I want it to be an interesting part that adds to the story and not just as an excuse for lazy writing.
I've listened to the audio drama which has patchy voice acting and audio effects.
It falls victim to many of the common mistakes I see in many audio dramas. For example, the background audio effects sometimes alternate with the narration. "He heard a women scream,[screaming woman audio sample]" or "the monster snarled [monster snarling sound]" and so on. So instead of complementing the narration it just redundantly pauses and repeats every beat of the narration with cheap stock sound effects.
My second problem is that the quality of the voice actors varies wildly. I think I have never heard a woman expressing grief and horror sound so comically bad and fake before which thoroughly kills the mood even if the writing itself is ok.
Yet another typical audio drama mistake is voice actors trying to shout or scream very quietly to avoid peaking their mic because they don't have the proper equipment or are missing a capable sound engineer.
The basic narration of the MCs POV is pretty good overall though.… (mehr)
