I originally read this back in the 90s in comic book format and had fond memories of it, so I welcomed a chance to revisit this space opera in one very thick and heavy hardcover. It wasn't as exciting as I remembered, as the main character seems to spend more time time speaking, thinking and praying about events than actually participating in them, but I still enjoyed the story and characters.

It's the future and humans are the least respected folks in the galaxy. Which means that life sucks pretty hard for Cassandra, the only human in the space academy. However, when war breaks out, and Cassandra and her alien friends are plunged into the middle of it, Cassandra finds out who she really is.

Well-written, with a great, beautifully quirky art style (the word balloons are especially fun) and well-drawn, interesting characters. It's very... human. Down to earth. By turns funny and tender and sad and exciting. A coming of age story about a girl and a motley group of friends trying to make their way in a war that's way over their heads.

If you like indie comics but you're turned off by ugly art and autobiographical angst, if you like heroines, if you like some intelligence and sensitivity and humor with your skiffy, or if you're just in the mood for fun, smart space-opera, read this. Highly recommended.
