I have really tried to finish this book. It is full of information and facts but I don't care for the writing style. There doesn't seem to be a personal touch, just dry facts. And at times I noted in the margins that there wasn't a full explanation for some things, which would have made it more understandable.

An excellent biography and general history book covering the life and work of Emmy Carlsson Evald who was not only instrumental in establishing the Lutheran Woman's Missionary Society, but played a key role as a tireless advocate for the woman's right to vote in the early suffragette movement. In addition, if you are a fan the city of Chicago and some of its history as it relates to the late 1800s and early to mid 1900s you'll recognize many of the locations that are mentioned in this book. A delightful personal look at an amazing woman, and a great general look at the history of the time, and the local history of Chicago as well. Highly recommended and enjoyable!… (mehr)

This was a resourceful book for women's history. The views of Chicago during this time period gave a vivid picture to the minds eye. Emily Carlsson Evad was a wonderful humanitarian as well as suffragest. This gives a detailed account of her parents lives and hers. It would be a great homeschool resource for anyone looking for a a unique woman to read about.

This volume tells of the life of Emmy Carlsson Evald, a suffragist and social activist. Wyman integrates Evald’s biography into the times and issues from just before Evald’s birth in 1857 to her death in 1946. Evald was an accomplished woman. She marched with Susan B. Anthony in support of American women’s right to vote. She established the Lutheran Woman’s Missionary Society with a worldwide mission to support education and health care for women. She was a tireless crusader for the rights and wellbeing of women everywhere. This book is more than a biography. It is an example of family history. Wyman is the great-granddaughter of Evald. At the end of the book, Wyman encourages readers to research their own family histories.… (mehr)
