- Known by various names, York is the author of numerous books connected to his syncretist “Nuwaubian” cult, fraternal organizations, and black nationalist or pseudo-American-Indian groups. Based in Brooklyn from the late 1960s, York led his followers to build Tama-Re, a Nuwaubian compound in Georgia, in the early 1990s. In 2002 he was arrested and charged with financial crimes and hundreds of counts of child molestation. He was convicted and sentenced to a U.S. “supermax” prison in Colorado. Tama-Re was seized and razed by authorities, but the Nuwaubian cult continued without its leader.
