Established in 1994 by Kadokawa Publishing and Fuji TV "for all readers living in the same era, and for talented artists who depict the light and darkness within humanity through dread." From the mehr anzeigen 2nd to the 18th editions (1995-2011), submissions were divided between long works and short stories, with the most outstanding in each selected for the grand prize. From the 19th edition (2012) on, in addition to the Grand Prize and Honorable Mention, a Reader's Choice Award was granted by a jury selected from the general public. After the 25th edition (2018), it merged with the Yokomizo Seishi Mystery Prize to form the Seishi Yokomizo Mystery & Horror Award. Grand Prize works are published by Kadokawa Publishing, and Reader's Choice Awards are published in the Kadokawa Horror Library (角川ホラー文庫).
