Copyright law : A Modern Disgrace

Forget Bleak House. Copyright law is now one of the so-called civilized world's most enduring monuments to legal power run amok.

Example: eighty years after the death of A. Conan Doyle, the rights concerning "Sherlock Holmes" literature are still reserved rather than being in the public domain. ( "For the Heirs to Holmes, a Tangled Web" : http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/19/books/19sherlock.html?hpw )

Yet, for some odd reason, it seems people treat the nonsense which is copyright law as some sort of taboo, fearing to denounce it when, in other domains, they'd readily denounce equally foolish stuff.

What has gone wrong? Why do people continue to meekly submit to such legal stupidity rather than challenging it?
