Sheep have had a bad press. People talk happily about their clever pets and even acknowledge that pigs are intelligent, but sheep are often dismissed as stupid. Sadly, even farmers and other professionals who work with animals have been heard to echo those sentiments about sheep.
The research presented in Part One of this book demonstrates that sheep are self-aware, highly sociable, intelligent animals. The research evidence is illustrated by behavioural observations, case studies, and photographs taken from my flock of Shetland sheep. Part Two tracks the progress of the author’s interest in sheep behaviour and the gradual development of a greater understanding and respect for the animals.
It is time to challenge the myth that sheep are stupid.
