In A Dangerous Journey Home, Christina Kohl, in the guise of her dead brother Frederick, has arrived in London newly knighted by King Edward II for her bravery fighting the Scots in the North. She has not returned alone. Accompanying her is Lady Cecily Baldewyne, a woman Christina rescued from a Scottish attack. Lady Cecily will be going on to join the court of Isabella, Queen of England, at Westminster. On the night of their arrival, she and Christina realize they have fallen in love in their short time together, despite the fact Cecily is a married woman. Their hearts are broken when Cecily leaves to assume her service to the queen.

Summoned by the chief alderman of the German merchants in London, Christina agrees to take her ship to the Baltic to join a fleet bent on destroying the pirates infesting the waterways north of Lübeck, Christina's birthplace. Manipulating her to do this is Katharine Volker, wife of the chief alderman, and Christina's bitter enemy. Christina prepares to depart, but her attention is torn between what dangers lie before her on her voyage and thoughts of how she can be reunited with Lady Cecily.

In the end, her problems are compounded by the unexpected appearance of a person from her past, one whose very existence threatens to destroy Christina and the precarious life she has built for herself.
