Berusaiyu no Bara (Versailles no Bara, BeruBara, Lady Oscar, The Rose of Versailles) is considered one of the classics of shoujo manga. Rose of Versailles is a work of historical fiction telling the tale of Oscar, a woman raised as a man and trained to be a royal guard for Marie Antoinette. Footnotes are added in places to help the reader understand the various political, social, and cultural events going on in France during the years leading up to the French Revolution. Rose of Versailles consists of 10 chapters making up the main story and 4 Gaiden (Side Stories) chapters. The series has been released in a 10 volume set (1 chapter per volume), 5 volume set (2 chapters per volume), and a 2 volume set (5 chapters per volume.) Each set has a seperate volume collecting the Gaiden chapters. Rose of Versailles has also been made into an anime TV series, a French live action movie, and 2 anime movies. Rose of Versailles has been turned into a ballet as well as a 4 musical versions have been created by the Japanese all woman theatre troup Takarazuka Revue. Currently, the mangaka Riyoko Ikeda (a trained soprano) is working on making an opera out of the story. Rose of Versailles has been translated into many languages including French, Spanish, Italian, and German; however a complete English translation has never been published.
