Über meine Bibliothek
Über mich
Born and raised in Noo Yawk City, I now live in rural small town South Carolina, far from the madding crowd. Here I find some measure of peace.

I scribble in my journal and on my blog. I read. I attempt to understand what happened. How the hell did I get from there to here.

Retired Army NCO (30 years been there, done that), an ex-soldier (if there is such a thing), I'm slowly creating my sanctuary/sacred space in the backyard with a shade garden. It's where I sit, read, write, and wax philosophical. Usually with my best friend Tina. My heart and my love, who helps me to find balance and a measure of peace.

In the kitchen I bake, using techniques and ingredients as close to real old-fashioned farmhouse style as possible. I use baking as a form of therapy along with my gardening.

Whether you are for, against or neutral about what is going on around the world I ask for one thing only. To be able to curl up with a book in the quiet moments is a balm for the mind and soul during tough times.

"Live right so when it comes your time to die,
you will not be like those whose hearts are filled with
the fear of death, who weep and pray for a little more
time to live their lives over again in a different way.
Sing your death song and die like a hero going home."
-Tecumseh

"I was that which others did not want to be,
I went where others feared to go,
and did what others failed to do.
I asked nothing of those who gave nothing,
and reluctantly accepted the thought of eternal loneliness,
should I fail.
I have seen the face of terror, felt the stinging cold of fear,
and enjoyed the sweet taste of a moment's love.
I have cried in pain and in hope,
but most of all I have lived times others would say were best forgotten.
At least some day I will be able to say,
that I am proud of what I was.
A Soldier."
-Anonymous

"There is no frigate like a book
To take us lands away,
Nor any coursers like a page
Of prancing poetry.
This traverse may the poorest take
Without oppress of toll;
How frugal is the chariot
That bears a human soul!"
-A Book by Emily Dickinson

"The fool doth think he is wise, but the wise man knows himself to be a fool."
-As You Like It (Act 5 scene 1), William Shakespeare

"I find television to be very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go in the other room and read a book."
-Groucho Marx

"The smallest bookstore still contains more ideas of worth than have been presented in the entire history of television."
-Andrew Ross

"If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need."
-Cicero

"A classic is a book that has never finished saying what it has to say."
-Italo Calvino, The Literature Machine

"I have often reflected upon the new vistas that reading opened to me. I knew right there in prison that reading had changed forever the course of my life. As I see it today, the ability to read awoke in me some long dormant craving to be mentally alive."
-Malcolm X

I grew up in a house full of books and will be eternally grateful to my parents for that. I have been there and done that and helped to make history with the places I have been, things I have done and things I have seen. Thirty years, one month, and eleven days down this road as a soldier but it has come to an end. I'm now retired for medical reasons. The infantry is not a good environment for a half-deaf diabetic with bum knees.
