- Peter Presley Thornton (10 August 1750 - 1780), Virginia landholder, officeholder, and army officer. Eldest son of Presley Thornton by his first wife, Elizabeth. He was a member of the House of Burgesses 1772-1774, of the conventions in July and December 1775, and colonel of a minute-man regiment, 1775-1777. He later served as an aide to George Washington, being appointed in August 1777.
Inherited the family estate at Northumberland upon the death of his father; it passed to his half-brother, another Presley Thornton, on Peter's death (Presley, who had served in the British army at Gibraltar, was restored to his rights as an American in 1783).
Peter Presley Thornton married first (1771) Sarah Throckmorton, and second (1778) Elizabeth Carter, daughter of Robert Wormeley Carter and granddaughter of Landon Carter. - Ort
