#5 MANDY! Yay a new puppy! How did this come about and how was this received? Tell more, please. And I am lost with that name. A pre-holiday puppy for Pepper?
#6 what a cute mix together. Does Avery's hair stay this shorter length? Picture 2 & 3 are so adorable.

#8: I wish Avery's hair stayed this length. I sure would save me a lot of money. LOL. He actually has to be groomed every 6 weeks or so to maintain the shorter length. Which is a pain, but I can't let him go with hair in his eyes all the time. And thanks!

8: Commander Data as in Star Trek: TNG.
Yes we're nerds!
When we bought our house we decided to look into getting a new dog. So we were just kinda checking the local shelters on petfinder for a while until we saw this guy. We filled out the app and picked him up that Saturday. The first 2 days were a little rough, Pepper was good with him but we could tell she was a little frustrated that her life was turned upside down with no notice. But now she plays with him and mothers him and is always making sure he is around and not doing anything bad. She is AMAZING with him. I'm so proud I just hope she is still ok with him when he gets bigger than her. He should end up being close to 2x her size.

#8 If Pepper doesn't play up the alpha female when necessary it might be shocking. I am so glad she's taking on the nurturing role. Pepper has a buddy = )
Ben adopted a baby kitty we found in the horrid Atlanta heat. Dropped in a parking lot and in a storm drain at "maybe" 6 weeks. His name is Jack short for Jackie Chan, as he has some real in the air back flips. Ben is quiet proud of him often sharing the kennel. I'll try to load a pic soon. Good luck with puppy. This Leopard breed is striking. Will look forward to watching Commander grow.

I like that picture a lot.

I don't seem to be able to master photobucket so I've added some pictures to my profile. See particularly Tipson sleeping on his back. He loves sleeping like that. It's hard to catch him that way but finally did.

#16 Theresa, I have one that lays down to eat and one that lays down to drink water! Tipson is too funny.

#13- I love it! So adorable! I wish Outlaw would get along like that with a cat. It would become his personal chew toy!

Oooohhhh ... I haven't been on here for ages, so am excited to see some new photos of old favourites (Ben!!) as well as some new furry friends. Here is a photo taken of Brontë at Christmas - she's definitely lost her "puppy face"now. She's wearing a little Christmas scarf, and taking a break from eating one of the pork chews from her Christmas stocking. Hope this works (I'm a little out of practice...)
(oops - edited to make the photo smaller - it was enormous!)

A very handsome pup! Thanks for sharing the photo.

Data Update! The boy is getting big. He is officially bigger than Pepper now, though not by too much yet. He is 5 months old, losing his teeth and a crazy happy go lucky dog that listens better to Pepper than to my husband and me. Here they are.
22BONS
#19 Oh Val, Bronte has grown into her name quite beautifully! I miss all the puppy looks from all our dogs but she's a love in her holiday scarf.
#20 Mandy, Data and Pepper look like a matching set in these pics. While Data's breed is new to me, he is handsomely marked. Doesn't Pepper look quite pleased to show him off in pic 1!

Ooohhh ... some news. Here is a photo of a dog that is soon to be mine:
Isn't he adorable? He is a 3 year old welsh springer spaniel named Flynn. I recently decided to start looking for a companion for Brontë, but didn't really want to go through the puppy stage again just yet (Brontë is still refining her manners!). I thought that I would struggle to find a mature welshie - which is what I really wanted - as there are not many breeders in Australia, so I thought it would take quite a while for a suitable dog to become available. Would you believe it ... the first day I started looking in earnest, there he was looking to be re-homed. I have not seen him in the flesh yet as he lives on the other side of the country, but he arrives this Friday afternoon. Brontë is such a social girl, I think she is going to love having a brother!

He is very handsome and I am sure Bronte will love having a canine companion to supplement her having you as a companion, too.
26BONS
VAL!!! How exciting is that news! Oh you and Mandy with new pups. Flynn just looks gentle..oh and here comes the alpha out in Bronte. = ) Glad you decided just in time it seems so Flynn could be yours..and arriving so soon, good deal. I'm not one for a wait once I have my mind made. exciting news.
27kirsty
Congratulations. You must be so excited about your new arrival. Flynn looks like such a handsome boy. I love his freckly feet. Go Spaniels!!!!
28valerie2
Thanks for your kind thoughts, Maggie, Bons and Kirsty. I was sure glad I only had to wait a week from the time I found Flynn for him to arrive - I felt like a kid waiting for Christmas! I left work early on Friday to pick him up from the airport, and he immediately seemed to bond with me, and he has settled in here as though he's been here all his life. He has such a gentle, placid nature (nowhere near as hyperactive as my girl!), and is really friendly and social. Brontë is absolutely loving having a companion: they follow each other everywhere. Flynn has been so good - not trying to take over any of her "space" (she has particular places in most rooms where she likes to settle) and adapting to all her routines - and in return she is happily sharing her toys and her "people". We have already had numerous trips to the park where he has made friends with our extended doggie group, we've had a few lots of visitors, and we've also been visiting (to my cousin, who has two labradoodles, each of which weigh more than Flynn and Brontë combined). I think getting a second dog could well be one of the best decisions I've ever made!!
Here are a couple of pictures of Flynn taken yesterday afternoon:
I'll try and get a photo of him and Brontë together sometime soon (when they both sit still long enough!) - he is quite a lot bigger than her.
(edited to add a second photo)

He looks very much contented and happy to be in his forever home! Congratulations.
30valerie2
Thanks Maggie! I'm actually stunned by how quickly and how well he's settled in! He's only been with me for just over two days, but already it feels like forever. He's such a good boy!
32BONS
Val, He is beautiful! Flynn is one handsome boy. Wavy ears and gentle looking. Bronte has to be thinking herself a lucky girl to get her home and now a special playmate too.
Why would one give him up?
Well , we didn't get to name this one but Flynn suits him well. Healthy red! Him settling in so quickly just testifies to his gentle nature but there was some unique timing here indeed!

Bonnie directed me here -> to the dog people. Ben (and Jack), Flynn, Data, Pepper, Avery: all wonderful. Loved seeing them.
Let's see if I can figure out how to link photos in...
Sky, German Shepherd Dog
and
Jay, smooth Collie
Guess it'll work, or it won't!

Hey desert horse, glad you popped over. This group has been very sweet to offers thoughts and suggestions on raising our pups. I love the sharing of pics, pup stories and even book recommendations. I'm always learning of new breeds on here too.
Sky & Jay are too sweet. I had a collie for years named Charlie. A fantastic family dog. My son is 24 he got him for his 1st birthday. When Tyler would sit on the floor in front of tv at night Charlie would creep down on all fours and Ty would use him as a pillow while he watched tv.
# 34 Maggie, this pic of Nicky would have been perfect for the thread "need a caption". What a look Nicky's giving! Love it.

I've bought Ralphy a new bed for his birthday on Thursday (St Patrick's Day). I ordered it from Orvis online and I have managed to buy the biggest dog bed in the world. It is so huge I can curl up in it! I don't know what I was thinking!! I will post some pictures next week of the birthday boy.
43maggie1944
My youngest niece used to sleep in the dog's little doughnut shaped beds. She loved how it surrounded her with a pillow, 360 degrees. She still looks at those beds, somewhat longingly. But at age 3 years she is definitely on the path to being "a big girl now". The dogs still love their doughnuts.
44deserthorse
>42 kirsty: Happy early birthday to Ralphy! How old will he be on Thursday? Since that bed is so big, maybe you need a Ralphette now?

>43 maggie1944: I can't tell you how many children have enjoyed getting in our super huge dog crate when we had it up before the dogs were grown.
46valerie2
Ooohhh ... Nicky, Sky, Jay and Ralphy are all beautiful! It's funny you talking about kids' fascination with the dogs' beds because my two nieces and nephew have just left after sleeping over last night, and they also spent huge amounts of their time curling up in the dog crate (and the rest of their time coercing the dogs into their beds). Kids and dogs really go so well together!
Here are a few weekend photos of Flynn and Brontë together:
Flynn about to pounce:
Chasing each other around the pool (and over the pool lounges - frightening the life out of my youngest niece, whose expression in this is priceless):
"Sharing" a stick:
Posing with my two nieces:
Flynn has settled in so well and so quickly in the last week, and Brontë is absolutely adoring having a brother to play with ... and the kids sleeping over this weekend was almost more excitement than the two dogs could take. The kids only left an hour or so ago, and both dogs immediately collapsed in an exhausted heap and haven't moved since! What a life!!

Thank you. The shiny coat is natural. I do very little to "keep it up". Thank you, schnauzer breeders, whoever you are, and wherever you are!

Just saw Greta Garbo, what a doll, looks like she's trying to take your spot in front of the 'puter.
PS My sister has a cat named Frank Sinatra.

Greta Garbo is the top bitch in my house and always tries to "take my place". She even likes to crawl into my arms when I'm driving, but I no longer let her do that. It kind of worked when she was a puppy, and small, but no more.
She is a wonderful schnauzer and I discovered this week that both of the schnauzers love ripe strawberries just off the vine.

Ah Bons, I do love photo of Ben enjoying a good book! Ive been missing'seeing regular photos of him - we've all been getting a bit slack about posting.
Brontë turned 2 last Tuesday (20th) - I'll post a photo shortly, but they are still on my camera. She has calmed down a lot (although is still pretty energetic), and she is such a lovely, nice natured, friendly girl.

Finally got around to downloading some photos - here are a couple of Flynn and Brontë taken yesterday:
Ball-obsessed Brontë:
The terrible twosome:
Flynn lounging around - I recently bought a new sofa and over-sized ottoman ... Flynn took one look at the ottoman and claimed it as his new dog bed. Occasionally I give in and let him have it:
Apologies for the oversized photos - I use photobucket and used to know how to make them smaller - now it doesn't seem to matter what I do, they always come out huge. :(
(edited to try - again - to make them smaller ... can get it to work on the portrait format but not the landscape ones)

And they are so beautiful when we can see all the little lovable details.
86valerie2
Thanks Maggie and Sarah! They are welsh springer spaniels - a lovely natured breed that want to be with "their people" all the time.
87maggie1944
I have Miniature Schnauzers because, in part, my parents brought home a Miniature Schnauzer from Germany in 1949 or 1950. Her name was Suzi and she was lost in New York City (I think...family stories...) And, my Dad, previously, back in his day, also had and loved his Springer Spaniels. I expect as a young man in northern Idaho in the 1910s and 1920s he was a hunter, and I'll bet his springers were his hunting dogs. I have a soft space in my heart for both my dogs and the springers. They are truly a fine dog!
88valerie2
I totally agree. Maggie. I also have a friend with two miniature schnauzers - Technics and Eva - and they are absolutely beautiful, full of personality and mischief! If I "downsize" in my old age I reckon I'll be getting miniature schnauzers.
89maggie1944
So, I have not posted a picture of the kids for a while so here is a recent shot of them being my favorite companions! Went to the vet with them today and although they both are aging and have their issues (Nicky, the black boy, is getting blind and deaf, as well as losing control of the back legs) both are doing well.

Val, I want to touch those wavy, silky ears on your pups. How nicely they have got along & just paired up!
Maggie-by chance is Greta G learning mountain goat traits? What a funny girl. My two 15 yr old Goldens are also having a time with those hips, hearing & vision & are completely white now and not red.
I'm jealous that Tirzah got in her pool. My three just use it as a giant water bowl.
And Maggie...Tiffany looks so terribly innocent here. This is what tricks one into thinking they can handle another puppy, isn't it?

What a sweet photograph. You should frame it and hang it in your home. You will love it for years.

I love that picture of Ben.
BONS, Tirzah is 1/2 Lab (sort of obvious) so she likes water, except getting in the bathtub (ack!).
She's not been to a real pond or lake, but I'd love to take her someday...or maybe even the ocean (the Outer Banks of North Carolina are about a 90 minute drive from home).
When Hurricane Irene came through, the ditches by the sides of the road were FULL, with probably about 18" of running water. She waded in and seemed to enjoy the experience.
