Earlier this month it was Childrens Book Week, traditionally I buy then the winner of the Gouden Griffel to get the free childrens book you get when you buy a book in this week.

The story:
Wolf and Rabbit find a human, a male, they take him home and keep him in a cage. Later they catch a stray female human in the garden, who they put in the cage with the male... Keeping a male and a female together... well you know... yes, they got a baby. Wolf and Rabbit decide to set the human family free.

A sweet picture book for 6 year or older, with great pictures by Philip Hopman. A kind of cross between the creation narrative and not explicit reproduction education.

This is "het Kinderboekenweekgeschenk" the free Childrens book you get when you buy Childrens books during the Childrens Book Week. Usually it is written by a well known writer.

The story of a nice young teacher to be, who teaches 3 days a week in his last year of his study. The children adore him, because he tries to solve problems in a very creative way.

But the reading is going better, I started The brothers Lionheart by Astrid Lindgren today, a classic childrens book.

#15: I don't think I've ever read The Brothers Lionheart, but I do have one book by her: Pippi Longstocking (still unread). I'll have to look for that one. Thanks! :)

I once saw a movie/tv adaption that followed the book very well.

I saw this book on Kerry's thread (avatiakh)
It is one of my favorites, so I decided it was time for a reread.

Beautiful written fairytale, adventure, about the two brothers Lion.
The youngest, Karl, is very ill, he adores his older brother Jonathan. Karl knows he will die soon, his brother tells him about the world Nangiyala, where he will go after his death.
But Jonathan dies first, he rescues his little brother from a fire. And Karl follows shortly after him. They both are now in Nangiyala, a world of fairytales and adventure. But evil has come to Nangiyala and both Karl and Jonathan join the resistance against the tyrant.

own collection, translated, SF/Fantasy, original English title The Many-Colored Land, first book of the Saga of the Exiles

Again a re-read.

description:
In the 22th century humanity has assimilated in the "Galactic Milieu", the unity of different races throughout the galaxy.
But some don't fit in this way of living. They want to leave.
In 2034 a French physicist found a one-way gate to the Pliocene Era on Earth, after his death it is used by humans that don't fit in the new Unity. And even this gate becomes an organised institution.
We follow the 8 members of Group Green in their exile. They don't find an undisturbed paradise on the the other side of the gate, but two races of extraterrestrials who fight their ancient battle now on the soil of Pilocene earth.

review:
This story is a mix of fantasy and science fiction.
The story starts in the 22nd century, where some people feel displaced. So they take their chance to travel way back in time. Then Julian May waeves old Celtic and other myths together with extraterrestials in Pilocene times (6 million years ago).

I still love it!
Now reading book 2 ;-)

#21 That one sounds really good Anita, I've also added it to my wishlist.

The Saga of the Exiles are four books:
The Many-Colored Land and The Golden Torc, these were mend to be ONE book, but the publisher thought it was too much and split it, The Nonborn King and finally The adversary.

One warning, the start is not easy, because many characters have to be introduced...

If you are hooked by then, there are more books, but those are in the 21th century: Intervention and then the three books of the Galactic Milieu series.

I own them all and will probably read them all this month :-)

#24: My local library has The Many-Colored Land and The Golden Torc together in one volume, so that works out perfectly! I will have to check and see if the library has the remaining books in the series. I do not want to start it and then find out I cannot finish the series!

I read them all back in the 1980s. They're not bad - entertaining, certainly. May is not as popular she once was, but back then she was a best-selling sf author.

I've not read any other besides the Saga of the Exiles, but I have Intervention somewhere on the TBR.

I rather liked the sound of The Many-Coloured Land too. Will look out for that and the rest of the series. I had heard of Julian May but not read anything - and until I read Ian's post 26 I assumed Julian May was male not female...

#30 You're not the only one! I somehow always knew J of N was female - I think because when I first came across her she was referred to as Dame Julian perhaps - but even with this prior female Julian knowledge it never occurred to me that Julian May might be female.

I knew Julian May was female, I think even before I started reading her books.
I finised the Saga of Exiles (reviews will follow soon).

Meanwhile we have been on vacation to France, like last year. I did not mention it here because it is not safe to say you are arway from home for some time, while your address is easely found on the internet too (at my website).

I was very happy with this picture of our little puffball ;-)

The puffy part is still his puppy coat, the red hairs on the top of his head is the mature coat coming through. His tail is going to be mosty white it seems. A whole new journey with an other breed :-)

Love the pictures of the dogs at the beach and in the water. They looked like they were enjoying themselves!

Sorry to be MIA again, we had a terrible week.
Just before we went to France I treated Ari with something against fleas, ticks and other pests, he got a terrible allergic reaction. This week his little feet flared up again so we were back to treating his feet twice a day (and he really hates it when you touch his feet...).

Monday we went to the vet with Eoos, her eyes were tearing badly again. We thought her tear duckts were blocked, and she was sedated to flush them. But it turned out she had a little curl in her eyelid, entropion and she got surgery right away. While she was sedated the vet also took X-rays from hips and ellbows, for official HD and ED results. Her hips look allright, but her ellbows not :-(
We don't have the official results yet, but if they are what the vet suspects, Eoos is not fit for breeding, so our breeding days might be over.
After this we ended up in the worst evening traffic jam ever, so the trip home was not a bit more than an hour, but 4 1/2 hours!

Poor Eoos wears an Elizabethan collar now and that while she is in heat too, life ain't easy for a young Chow Chow... And neither for her owners...

We have winter arriving early this year, Ari loves the snow!

Still snow around and everyone (well at least the dogs) love it. The wind makes it chilly outside, but in a few days the snow will be gone, weather forecast tells us the temp goes up and next week we will get rain instead of snow.

I hope Eoos is doing well--sorry to hear about her problems. If she is happy and painfree, though, that is the most important. And Ari is such eye-candy, although I imagine he is a little pill to handle at times.

For now Eoos is doing well, you don't see ANYTHING in her movement, that was why we were so disappointed. Chances are she will live her life happely without too much problems, because both ellbows are evenly worse. I know some Chow Chows who have very bad hips, but don't have any symptoms of pain. But it is a bit hard because it is the end of our breeding plans.
Yes Ari is a little dog who thinks he is big and a handfull at times. We have worked out his attitude toward touching his feet ;-) He does not do welll if you try to force him, luring works much better.

Hello Anita, I'm sorry to hear about the disappointment about Eoos and future breeding plans. I hope she doesn't have to wear the collar for long. Have you still got the snow - we've had it here for almost 2 weeks now. My dog gets very excited running about in it!

If all goes well Eoos collar goes off tomorrow. And we think the worst days of her heat are over too, it has been a rough time. Ari finally found out yesterday how to play with Eoos without being bothered by the cone collar ;-)
The snow is nearly gone, most has melted and froze again, so it is awfully slippery outside. Walking the Chows is a challenge!
The Chows love all cold weather, as long as it is dry outside (no wet grass), so they are happy with it. Ari's feet are clearing up and he is his happy, jumpy self again.

But I am reading now The Surveillance, back to Earth in the sixties and seventies of the 20th century... What happend on Earth before some humans went in Pliocene Exile :-)

An incredible soulfull and great book. Patricia Reilly Giff describes humans of flesh and blood, and makes you care about them. Slowly the life of Hollis Woods is revealed and the way Josie reaches out to her makes miracles happen.

Written by Rogatien in 2113.

review:
Some of the history is dated, who could predict in 1987 (when Julian May wrote this book) that two years later the Iron Curtain and the Berlin Wall would fall?
But you can read it as a kind of alternate history and I personally remember those days when Russia was larger and called the USSR ;-)
This book and the next Metaconcert are the link between the Saga of the Exiles and the next three books Galactic Milieu.

Thank you, it was a long time ago I read these books and when I finished the Saga of the Exiles, I needed to read the others too.
Did you ever read them?

I did, way back in the 1980s. I liked them a lot then. I wonder if they'd speak to me as much now, but I'm a little afraid to find out.

I'm reading a book that has a Dutch painter as its narrator...but not one of the usual suspects, like Rembrandt...a man called Rudolf Bonnet, famous for painting in Bali when it was still a Dutch colony, and in the company of a German painter called Walter Spies. The book, Island of Demons by Nigel Barley, is very, very good! If there is a Dutch translation, I'd suggest getting it.

Today Ari is 7 months old and I have a photo I almost forgot about, taken especially for you all, Ari between the books:

Ari may look more catlike (in fact he does look a lot like a Persian), the Chows ACT more catlike, they are called the most catlike dogs, because they are very clean and are difficult to train. Ari does try to beat them in the last part, but due to his long hairs there is no way he could be as clean as the Chows.

I took the Ari in the bookcase photo for LT, as I though you all might like 'm ;-)

I love the bookcase photo - that DOES remind me of something a cat would do...

And I laughed at the picture with your husband, because you can't even see Ari's face! :) What a nice photo...

Ari can't climb, so he can only use the lowest shelf ;-)
At the photo with Frank it would be impossible to see Ari's face, he is sitting with his back to de camera! I admit it is sometimes hard to determine his front from his back LOL

Lol yes, when I first saw the photo it was hard even to tell which end of Ari was his head or tail! :)

I am reading awfully slow at the moment, this book (322 pages) took me 9 days!
I still blame Ari, his coat needs a lot of brushing and combing and with the snow, that he LOVES, he returns inside as a little iceball, the snow sticks in icy-balls to his fur LOL To avoid a very wet floor, I have to brush them out.
But Ari is more than worth all that time!

I can see Ari as one big snowball :)

#96: For me, 322 pages in 9 days is not bad. Besides, critters should come first, imho. They're so much fun! :) (Btw, we just adopted a dog yesterday at the humane society, so now I officially have no time to read--lol!)

Especialy in the first year dogs are a lot of work, raising, training... after that you know eachother well enough, so everything goes smooth and easy (or easier)... The year we kept Eoos from our litter, I barely read 75 books and most of this years readings were from before Ari's arrival ;-)

Thanks for the advice, Anita! :) Oh yeah, I think we'll (*ahem* us humans) need some training. He's about 5 years old, but so energetic and loving. And energetic. Did I forget to mention energetic? :D So he's perfect for our other terrier mix (she just lost her buddy a couple months back, and she's really been depressed).

Oops, sorry to babble. :) But you did bring up another good point: I may have to rethink my reading goals for next year. I may stick with 75, but who knows if I'll even have time for that. We'll see....

The energetic part might be worse the first week(s), if he is not sure yet about his new place. Some dogs get quiet the first time, others, well... you get the picture LOL

Yes, training goes both ways, I am well aware of that, ours do a well job in training us, stupid humans.
I remember when Chimay was young, she was in the stage they pick up everything on the street, and she had a piece of paper in her mouth. So I told her to drop it, I thought she ignored it so I said with a bit darker voice: drop it! She looked me in the eye, picked up the paper again (yes she had dropped it at the first command), looked up again to make sure I saw it and literary spitted it out again! Looked up again as if she said: Did you SEE it now!
She is the best communicating dog we have ever had :-)

Chimay is a GREAT dog, the first pup who was born at our place and was not sold.
She was raised by Nemo in his last years, he was the smartest dog we ever had, almost an intellectual dog ;-)
She is 6 years now and unchallenged ruler of the pack.

own, non-fiction, Pekinese

An other breed, so now collecting books about the Pekingese. There are not many Dutch books available, but found this one second hand on the internet for a reasonable price :-)
Breed description, breeding, taking care and raising a Pekingese (and Shih Tzu).
Informative, a bit outdated here and there (it was published in 1983) and some nice photos.

Better than last year when I only managed to read 78 books, and a tiny bit less than 2008, when the total was 129.
So the temporary conclusion is that my readings vary between 75 and 130 books a year, depending on circumstances in life :-)
