Yiddish speakers around? & recommendation

My Modern Hebrew's not up to much. How's your Yiddish?

Also, books in Yiddish/ Yiddish theatre historical stuff/ anything you can recommend? Have tried some of the standards Chaim Potok - liked The Chosen a lot but not liked any of his others. Tried some other popular ones but can't remember them at present.
I'm reading Beautiful as the moon at the moment. Not got far but it looks pretty awesome.

Well one great book about collecting Yiddish books is Outwitting History by Aaron Lansky. There have been a couple of contemporary writers who are using Yiddish theatre and writers as important aspects of their books-The Angel of Forgetfulness by Steve Stern and Songs for the Butcher's Daughter by Peter Manseau. I think that both books have some flaws but are interesting to read. your recommended book sounds interesting.

It's from the library. It's not easy going entirely, it's feminist-inspired and has a scholarly introduction. I've just had to take it back to the library and take it out again because you're only allowed to renew 3 times. That was when I figured I may have to try and get my own copy...

Another book that I read a long ago was published in Canada-
Found Treasures:stories by Yiddish Women Writers by Freda Forman( and many other translators).
It was published in 1994 Toronto by an independent press-Second Story Press. Freda Forman gathered together a group of women writers and editors. They selected and translated stories by Yiddish women writers.

There's also Arguing with the storm : stories by Yiddish women writers, edited by Rhea Tegebov. The translations are by women from the Winnipeg Women's Yiddish Reading Circle.

Have you seen this? There is online access, free of charge, to the full texts of nearly 11,000 out-of-print Yiddish titles from The Yiddish Book Center.
