How do y'all shelve your commentaries? What do you do about sets in which each volume has a different author -- how do you alphabetize them?
Thanks!
Thanks!

We have a section following Bibles that is labeled Bible Concordances, Studies, Commentaries. Following that is another section labeled Jesus Commentaries. Particularly in contemporary Christian literature there are a lot of books that comment on Jesus's life and message as it relates to our modern world. These seemed to almost naturally sort themselves out as a separate sort of literature from traditional studies and commentaries.
For series that have individual authors, the series is alphabetized under the series's editor's name, or perhaps the name of the institution that sponsored or published the set, e.g. Oxford University, Cambridge, etc.
We use a simple alpha shelving system, where Bibles are indicated by L, Concordances etc. by L1, Jesus Commentaries by L2.

Each commentary in a series gets its own Dewey number and is cuttered by the author. So, in our library, the sets don't sit together, the commentaries about each book of the Bible do.

Each commentary in an unnumbered series gets its own Dewey number, subdivided by the author's last name.
When the library was much smaller, Abridged Dewey numbers had been assigned to commentaries. As the collection grew, we moved everything to unabridged Dewey numbers in order to keep these materials (and other parts of the collection) better organized.

How about if I'd like to have the entire set sit together on the shelf? For example, using Dewey a New Testament set will be spread out over 226, 227, 228. Any ideas?

#4 Use 225.07 and add vol. #s, even if you have to "invent" them. All commentaries on the NT will sit together. For the whole Bible use 220.7.
A series like Anchor Bible can be done by whole Bible, by OT, NT and Apocrypha - they have different cover colors - or by book. Do what's best for your patrons.

#7 To clarify and expand:
The cutter wouldn't be the author in a "made-up" set. If you wanted the NT Barclay commentaries to sit together, it's OK to cutter by the author. Anchor Bible has different authors so, in that case, I'd cutter under Anchor as title. Since it's a "mark and park" in reality anyway, it really doesn't matter. The catalog will get you there.
Also in Anchor, OT is blue, NT is red and Apocrypha is yellow. On the shelf, you can spot immediately, even at my college library day job with ranks of Bible commentaries and introductions.
