Just a quick question for those more experienced then me. I notice that there are certified genealogists. How does one become certified? Are there college classes and degrees available?

Just curious....

Here's a good article telling you exactly what you need to do to become a certified genealogist:

http://www.genealogy.com/20_hnkly.html

That page includes a link to the Board of Certificaiton.

The IIGS, NGS, BYU, and Genealogy.com all have online classes you can take, many of which are free.

Thanks pdxwoman. Very interesting article. I was wondering about all the certification and stuff.

Anyone here certified, just curious?

I'm curious about the certification process, too. I found a lot of online courses, and am going to put the list right here...

BYU Independent Study has several free courses; very nicely done, and easy to work through.

www.genclass.com offers a variety of courses; I don't know anything about them, though.

Monterey Penninsula College also offers a series of four courses taught by reknowned genealogist Karen Clifford. The courses are taught online.

The NGS courses look very good, and you can be graded for your efforts - probably would look good if you're pursuing certification...
