Trying to remember...

I read a short story in high school and it has been haunting me for years. I can't remember the title or the author and I've never had luck looking for it in any story database.

I'm wondering if someone here might remember reading this story and tell me what it is...

It's about a father and son walking on some railroad tracks and the son gets his foot stuck. Unable to free his son, eventually he hears the sound of a train coming. The father runs off and is able to stop the train before it reaches his son. His wife is amazed at his ability to know which way to run, but in the father's mind it's revealed that he didn't/couldn't know. He took a 50/50 shot and he was right.

Do you think it might be "My Father and I" by the Swedish author Par Fabian Lagerkvist? It seems to be a close match.
