NYTimes article today about another implication of digital books -- the loss of material, including marginalia, associated with former copy owners. The Caxton Club in Chicago is publishing a collection of essays about books with interesting former owners. LibraryThing member moibibliomaniac is a contributor.

Thanks for sharing that interesting article, David.

I hope publishers never stop producing dead tree cookbooks. I'd hate to have to write recipe notes electronically. :(

Regarding sharing marginalia on ebooks, can they be shared when lending an ebook to another reader? Does the e-marginalia about a specific book also transfer or not?

If not, perhaps there's where a site like Bookcrossing would work for e-books. One electronic book could have marginalia (i.e. journal entries) from various readers that are actually shared online.

It's not the same, though. I know.
