Reviewing Joseph Lelyveld' new Gandhi biography, Great Soul: Mahatma Gandhi and His Struggle with India for the Wall Street Journal, the historian Andrew Roberts says that Gandhi was a "sexual weirdo".

The negative juicy bits in the WSJ review aren't new information by any means. And not unexpectedly they would be what a publication with WSJ's leanings would emphasize. Gandhi was a "sexual weirdo", and Mother Teresa refused to use medical painkillers in her "hospice," preferring instead to let her charges writhe in agony as Mama T posed clutching them in her arms for photogs, etc.

Publicity hungry saints leave trails of doo-doo like chickens, only the ones who stay up on their pedestals escape being human beings.

Did Bayard Rustin ever meet Gandhi?

Yawn. they say that about any dead historical figure regardless of wether they even had a conception of what 'being gay' means. After reading some 'queers in history' book I said to my librarian friend 'Wow - I never knew that about Arthur Lowe' (probably the most un-gay British actor you could find) whch seemed to sum up the book. Loads of conjecture and possibility that somebody might once have had sex with a person of the same sex. One shag does not a gay make.

7> exactly. You could include nearly every man in history depending on your notion of "gay".

Any man who has been tempted subconsciously to buy underwear because of the picture of a sexy guy on the packaging.

8> The picture of a sexy guy on the underwear packaging is not for men buying underwear, it's for their wifes, the ones that usually buy the nderwear.

9>Yes, you are probably right. I was just giving a ridiculously wide definition of gay.

Though I would point out that these days about a quarter of all men under 40 have never been married. I haven't noticed so many men "going commando". I'm not suggesting that I check every one though.

Gay men buying a package of underwear may be attracted to the sexy man on the packaging, but I think straight men often simply want to _be_ that man, rather than boink with him.

As I understand the bio, Ghandi was sexually celebate from both men and women but did have emotional attatchments to both
