April 2011 Readathon

We've been talking about another Readathon and need to plan it and publicize it. The first step was to start this thread . . .

Green Dragon is doing a mini-one on the 23rd. Would be nice to have other LT company.

Not sure how Holy Saturday will work for me, but I'll keep my eye out for the sign up and try to squeeze in some reading . . . even if it ends up being Easter-related. I'll probably be finishing up The Last Week.

I find Easter one of the calmer holidays - of course, I've got no kids around. But even on Christmas with my family there I can fit in an hour or so of reading...

We need someone to change the description to have a link to the new Readathon. If not, we need to ask Tim to change the owner of the group to someone who's still here - ejj1955, are you willing to take it on? I'd be willing, as long as all I have to do is write pages - someone else does the organizing and publicizing. Or maybe Jeremy should take it.

Hey all! This is great, and I'll be happy to run publicity for you on the LT side (blog, FB, Twitter, homepage announcement, SOTT, all that good stuff).

For the moment I've set myself as admin, but I'm really hopeful we'll be able to get multiple admins up and running very soon.

Anyway, let me know if you all want to decide on a theme or whatever, otherwise we'll just run with it as a readathon and start spreading the news!

I think I did it right. The directions looked so confusing, but it seemed pretty easy (unless I really messed up and don't realize it).

Could someone change the title on the signup page to include the date of the ReadaThing? or have it appear somewhere on that page. (I couldn't figure out where to put it, but it should be there further up on the page rather than only down on the chart.)

Ok, I put the dates in (it's April 22-24, in one time zone or another!). I put First Anniversary as the theme - so anything about years or anniversaries or firsts or... Or is chocolate a better theme? We could save that for next October, in a Halloween theme, too...

Anybody got a good "readathing" image I can use for the blog post? Having a little trouble coming up with a good one :-)

ok, I'm visiting my Mom for the holiday & since we both read a lot anyway, we will both be reading for the ReadaThing!!

At first when I asked her, she thought I meant we had to go to the local library to read. Then I explained that, no, we could read at home, but we were promising that we would read at a specific time & for an hour, she was fine with it.

She didn't quite get it at first, but more reading?? always good for it!

I'll be reading C. S. Harris' book, Where Shadows Dance.

Apparently none of your readers is a woman trying to get her house cleaned and preparing for an Easter dinner for lots of guests!! I'll be looking forward to the next non-family-holiday Readathon event.

I am a woman and I will be reading since I will be going over to my mother-in-laws for Easter. I seem to be lucky in getting out of having the dinners at my house.

Female here, currently cleaning frantically for a showing of my house tomorrow. But no Easter guests, so finding an hour to read on Saturday easily done. Finding an hour to read most days possible, even if it happens after I'm tucked into bed.

This sounds wonderful - actually pretty much like a lot of other Saturdays - as a grad student in history, one reads!

I have been on LibraryThing for a wee while now but especially when I was in the midst of my degree I didn't have as much time for it as I would have liked, and this is my first post in a group. I have signed up to the time sheet, I think it sounds like a really great idea! I only found it on the LibraryThing blog today so I'm afraid I won't be sticking to the theme as I don't have anything on my 'to read' stack that fits. I'll just be reading stuff that I have on the go already. I'm guessing that if I am intending on finishing one book and reading part of another I put them both on the book list for the event, right? I'll do that and if you want to take one off, you can. Fingers crossed I do it right, this is my first experience with using Wikis!

Yep, you don't _have_ to stick to a theme. Actually, what I usually end up doing is reading whatever and finding a way to stretch the theme so it fits... Go ahead and put your books on, as many as you think you'll read. Usually the list gets heavily revised after the ReadaThing's over - books people didn't get to, extra books they read instead or as well...

90% of the time I do a Wiki edit, I put it in, look at the preview, go back and try a few changes, look at the preview...pretty much the way I do any Talk post that has HTML in it, though we don't have preview, yet. Cut-and-try - as long as you don't delete other people's entries, you can't do damage, and even if you do you or someone can revert the page to before your changes (it remembers everything from the start). I'm just getting ready to read for my hour. I've got some David Brin short stories loaded on my ereader. I can't remember which science fiction author was my first but Brin was one of the first I read. First I'll read 'Gorilla My Dreams', then if I've still time I'll start 'The Smartest Mob'.

It's almost 11pm here. Everyone else is asleep and the house is quiet. I'm reading in bed and once my hour is up it's off to sleep for me as well. I'll check back in the morning. Night everyone.

I finished my hour but kept reading because I wanted to finish two books. One was The Head of the House of Coombe which has been on my currently reading list for months, and the other was The Janissary Tree which is my latest library book.

Now I'm off to bed!

I overran my hour also. I wanted to finish Borderlands so I could return it on my library run tomorrow (well, that would be later today now, I guess :)).

Ha-ha-ha; I started early for my hour and finished Still Life, which was a fun easy read. Such a good excuse to make time to read, and continue!

Now I am going over my allocated hour and reading Already Dead - which is quite fun also.

Done! I still haven't got to the end of either book. I generally switch between my academic one and my non-academic one to make sure I don't get break freeze!
If any of you guys haven't read Life of Pi, I would seriously recommend it. I'm about half way through and it is incredible.

I agree. I read the Life of Pi many years ago, and thought it was great; what a great book to select for the readathing! I have it in my library as a re-read and I am looking forward to reading it once again.

Just starting my block of time right now... I have my glass of orange juice, and the telephone and tv are turned off... :)

I read from 12:00-4:00; had a nap and I'm back... with very puffy eyes. I've finished three books so far (I had started two):
La Couleur des rêves (The Colour in English) by Rose Tremain; Mini-Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella and Journal d'Hirondelle by Amélie Nothomb.
I've also read a couple of essays from Double Lives: writing and motherhood

I'm off to read Twelve Sharp by Janet Evanovich for the next hour with my doggie-reading companion on my lap.

Well, I didn't sign up for a time because I just wasn't sure what today would hold for me. But it turns out I'll have lots of reading time (in addition to the reading time before falling asleep), so I'll be with you all in spirit, so to speak. I'll be finishing (I hope) The Dawn Country, the 2nd in the People of the Longhouse series. And I have totally blanked on how to make a link from the title! Can someone tell me how, please? I know I'll be head-slapping myself when you do!

Ah, I see, you're doing the author version. Look to your right - the instructions are there when you're creating/editing a post. Single square brackets for works, double brackets makes it look for an author with those words...

No, it's just being stubborn - the correct book doesn't even show up on (others). To force a touchstone, go find the book (search in another tab), get the work number, then put that in the brackets followed by double colons and the title.

A bit late posting, but I did read for my hour earlier this morning. As predicted, I read the Holy Saturday chapter in The Last Week. I also read a few of the entries in Stricken: Voices from the Hidden Epidemic of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome edited by Peggy Munson.

Misc. details: I started a few minutes late because my tea was still brewing :) I read in my every morning reading spot, "The Field of Dreams Reading Lounge", which can be seen at:

My cat accompanied me for about 20 minutes, then got bored and went to warm herself on the heat vent.

Wish I could attempt more of the do nothing but read day, but it ain't happening this weekend.

I am half way finished with Camille Claudel: A Life. And glad I had the chance to complete a couple hours of reading for Readathing today. Ultimately,this book is bringing many unanswered questions I had about Camille Claudel to light. I’ve studied most of her work, and knew of her connection to Aguste Rodin, and this book begins to fill in some of those missing pieces that were left unanswered... I am going to continue reading for a few more hours with the goal of completing the book by this weekend.

I have read a couple of essays in L'art difficile de ne presque rien faire (The Difficult Art of Doing Next to Nothing) by Denis Grozdanovitch. It seemed appropriate for this event!
I also read a short story by Joyce Marshall in Any Time at All and Other Stories.
I've read for 7.5 hours today. My brain is feeling cottony. I need a good mystery to keep going so I'm starting La voleuse de livres by Marcus Zusak (The Book Thief)

I remember an old movie about Camille Claudel that was pretty good.

I ended up reading for over 2 hours - once I got started, I didn't want to stop. I'd read about half-way through the book before and thought I knew how it ended - who the killer was. I've been reading the past hour, but now I'm about to start my official hour's read of The Tiger's Wife. This is one strange, enchanting book.

Starting my official hour of reading in ten minutes, continuing with Terra Incognita by Ruth Downie. Must get tea first.

I read about 45 minutes past my official hour because I just couldn't stop. Now for a little snack and LT checking, then back to The Tiger's Wife. So far, I can't see why it wouldn't win the Orange Prize this year, but I haven't read all the rest of the short list so don't know that much about the competition.

I read about 40 pages of The Year of Pleasures this morning on my porch. A beautiful day for reading outside!

My mother is reading The Garden of Betrayal by Lee Vance. She is enjoying it, but is getting the feeling that she read it before. We are wondering if she did read it before or what the similar book is that this book is reminding her of.

I did my hour of reading and read longer because I wanted to finish the book I was reading. I read A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess. Interesting read. I will add my books to the list. I also read One Thousand White Women by Jim Fergus.

Just finished my hour about an hour or so ago. It was nice just to relax and read straight through for one hour. We should definitely have these more often. I really enjoyed it.

I read Death at Epsom Downs by Robin Paige as I am working through the series right now. This kind of got me in the mood to do some more reading tonight. Off to get in a few more chapters before bed.

I did it! 15 hours of reading and 639 pages later... I'm going to bed.

I got in my hour plus another yesterday and am just about finished with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead.

Between yesterday and today, finished Terra Incognita by Ruth Downie. Very enjoyable mystery series set in Roman Britain and featuring a doctor/detective and his British slave/housekeeper/lover.

I'm a little late but I haven't had internet access. That, plus the fact that it rained all day on Saturday, and I spent most of the day reading!

I finished Lament for a Maker by Michael Innes and I started Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë.

Been away from my computer, but I read my block plus the next half hour (so from 7-8:30am). Nearly finished Across the Universe by Beth Revis.
