I've been wanting to do some major reading about American history, focusing mainly on the early years, founding fathers, etc, for a while now. I'm not sure how long this'll go for, or how many books exactly it'll be, but should be some interesting reading. Currently the list includes:
Founding Brothers
Benjamin Franklin: Autobiography, Poor Richard, and Later Writings (Library of America)
the Federalist Papers
Collected Writings
The road to Monticello : the life and mind of Thomas Jefferson
Revolutionary characters : what made the founders different
Benjamin Franklin : an American life
John Adams
1776
Plain, Honest Men
a Brilliant Solution: Inventing the American Constitution
the Constitution of the United States of America with the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation
We Hold These Truths
the Greater Journey
Alexander Hamilton: American

I have read John Adam, and 1776, love any thing by David McCullogh, only history of his I have not read is his Truman.
Also have read Benjamin Franklin: Autobiography. What an interesting man.
I have the Federalist Papers on my TBR pile.
If your reading about the founders, have you read anything about Alexander Hamilton? he often gets overlooked as a founder, since he was never President. Two books I would recommend are
Alexander Hamilton: American by Richard Brookhiser and Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow

I noticed you recently added Plain, Honest Men. That is the best book on the Constitutional Convention that I have found. I will be interested to see what you think about it.

Looks like a great list. How's it going? Have I missed some reviews, on other threads perhaps?

Haven't started yet. Still gathering books. I'll be posting reviews here: http://www.librarything.com/topic/107655&newpost=1#lastmsg when I start. I'm also finishing the books I'm currently reading so I can focus on this project.

If anyone has any recommendations for biographies of other founders, or any other relevant subject, I would appreciate it. I'm starting the Greater Journey tonight. This will be the second McCullough book I've read, though I haven't actually finished the first, his book about Teddy Roosevelt's family (yet).

Left off the Greater Journey after discovering it didn't cover the relevant time period. Will be starting 46 Pages this weekend.

The Ascent of George Washington was very good. I also liked Hogeland's The Whiskey Rebellion. I've heard good things about Gordon Woods' new book, but I haven't read it myself.

I really like to read primary sources. The Library of America has books of writings by Washington, Madison, Hamilton and several others. The also have a terrific book American Revolution: Writings From the War of Independence. It has writings from every point of view that cover the whole war.
