Welcome to the bright, shiny, magpie-attractant twelfth iteration of the Discworld quote game!
And now the quote to start us off:
“And it doesn’t occur to you that they might be part of some clever plan?”

And pwaites has it – it was indeed Night Watch. Take it away pwaites!

"Rincewind had always been happy to think of himself as a racist. The One Hundred Meters, the Mile, the Marathon -- he'd run them all."
11edrandrew
You have the right not to injure yourself falling down the steps on the way to the cells. You have the right not to jump out of high windows.
15justjim
Is that a young Kzad-bhat*, later to become Captain Carrot, quoting the Laws and Ordinances of the Cities of Ankh and Morpork in Guards! Guards!?
*Head banger

16edrandrew
You have it - though I rather suspect that the two lines may appear elsewhere, that's where I found them
17justjim
Let's stick with the Watch.
Detritus looked mildly offended at this. 'Oh no, sir' he said, 'I made sure they knew I hit 'em.'

20pinkozcat
*sigh* and I am sure that it is not from Unseen Academicals. Is it?
26justjim
Yes indeedy do! Vimes remark just before this was "Didn't know what hit him, eh?" Over to you.
27pinkozcat
Ah - and I was running out of options.
Here is one for all the Amelia Peabody fans out there:

Hmm, I know it’s Angua talking to Carrot, but when? Feet of Clay?
31pinkozcat
No, not Going Postal.
34pwaites
"On the fabled hidden continent of Xxxx, somewhere near the rim, there is a lost colony of wizards who wear corks around their pointy hats and live on nothing but prawns."
35justjim
As a Forexian, I distinctly remember reading that and hoping that Pterry would write more about this fabled hidden continent, and of course in The Last Continent he did just that.
Where did I read it though? I don't think it was in the first few books because by that time I was already hooked and really knew I wanted to see what his treatment of Australia would be.
So, middling early... My guess is Mort.

36pinkozcat
I have read that phrase reasonably recently. Ummm Interesting Times?
39joannasephine
Or is it early? The Light Fantastic?
43Ardagor
"He stared at the label. It seemed to be Jimkin Bearhugger`s Old Selected Dragon`s Blood Whiskey. Cheap and Powerful. You diden`t have to drink much of it to get drunk, which was just as well."
49joannasephine
Night Watch? The young Nobby to Carcer?
54justjim
What a coincidence! I just tweeted this quote because I love it, but I couldn't immediately remember where it was from. Then I checked LT Talk and it clicked.
Disclaimer: This is from memory. I'm in bed and I'm not getting up to check the exact wording!
Build a man a fire and he'll be warm for one night. Set a man on fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.

55edrandrew
Sounds like the theology of Deacon Vorbis in Small Gods.
57pinkozcat
I've just read that somewhere and the last Pratchett I read is Unseen Academicals. I know that it is my default answer but ...
60justjim
And that's where you would have found it! Or something like it, I still haven't looked it up to see how close I was.
Over to you!
Over to you!
61pinkozcat
This one is for the Andrew Marvell lovers.
The crypt's a handsome place to be, but none I think leave after tea

62edrandrew
Carpe Jugulum to go for the obvious one.
63pinkozcat
No - not Carpe Jugulum
65pinkozcat
No - not Making Money.
69joannasephine
Ok, guessing wildly – The Fifth Elephant?
70pinkozcat
No - not The Fifth Elephant either
71pinkozcat
A hint.
The misquote comes from a poem by Andrew Marvell, called "To His Coy Mistress", and the proper lines are:
The grave's a find and private place
But none, I think, do there embrace.
it goes on -
Thus therefore whilst the youthful dew
Sits on thy cheek like morning dew
And while thy willing soul transpires
At every pour with instant fires ... etc.

No - not Masquerade. Sorry ...
74joannasephine
Know the original source, but not which Pratchett it comes from!
And poetry doesn’t fare too well on the Discworld. Hmm. Are we being too literal, going down the vampires route? Do we need to think more … romantically? The mad Seraph who kept wanting to be told stories? Sourcery?

77pinkozcat
Yeah! Yes it is Unseen Academicals. Nott telling Glenda that he is not quite sure about that couplet in the poem which he wrote for Trev to give to Juliet.
Your turn, pwaites

80pwaites
"There was not a lot that could be done to make Morpork a worse place. A direct hit by a meteorite, for example, would count as gentrification."
81pinkozcat
It sounds like an early one. Guards! Guards?
82CharlesFerdinand
Thief of Time (a wild guess)
84pinkozcat
Another wild guess - Equal Rites?
86pinkozcat
Maybe The Colour of Magic?
95ronincats
Moving Pictures? Only because it's number 10, and why would you have said in the first TEN and not the first 5...
98Ardagor
"Hright, said sergeant Colon, this men, is your truncheon, also nomenclatured your night stick or baton of office. He paused while he tried to remember his army days, and brightened up.
Hand you will look after hit, he shouted. You will eat with hit, you will sleep with it, you-"

106edrandrew
Well, really - are we all suffering from a surfeit of (something suitably alliterative that I can't think of at the moment)? To get things moving (and as a bonus clue, itth Igor thpeaking)....
"Thurtainly, thur. If you will excuthe me, I will go and fetch another finger."
"Thurtainly, thur. If you will excuthe me, I will go and fetch another finger."
107justjim
Well done for picking up the baton and thankths for the hint!
Hmm, Igorth are my favourite characterth, but which one?
Perhaps this one has been careless around a Watchman-carrying bird of prey? Monstrous Regiment?

King john was said to have died of a surfeit of lampreys but I think that was an urban myth.
King john was said to have died of a surfeit of lampreys but I think that was an urban myth.
110edrandrew
No, non, nein. With my usual disclaimer that it may appear in some, one or several of the above but I happened to find it somewhere else.
111joannasephine
Hmm … The Truth?
116Artur
Ok, let's try this one-
"Always remember that the crowd that applauds your coronation is the same crowd that will applaud your beheading. People like a show."
"Always remember that the crowd that applauds your coronation is the same crowd that will applaud your beheading. People like a show."
118justjim
Sounds like the wisdom of the Low King. The Fifth Elephant?
119Artur
Sorry, it's not Guards! Guards! or The Fifth Elephant.
126Artur
pinkozcat has it; it's Going Postal. It's just at the point where Moist decides to challenge the Grand Trunk to the race. Over to you, pinkozcat.
127pinkozcat
I should have guessed it sooner; I re-read Going Postal only a couple of weeks ago.
Here is a nice easy one:
Claude Maximillian Overton Transpire Dibbler, a name bigger than the man himself.

129pinkozcat
A couple of threads ago?? I must have missed it but you are correct; it is Making Money.
130edrandrew
Change of plan on the text as some vital formatting didn't work out. Let's go for...
'Yes. And he'll either pass or fail. I'd like to see him manage 84 per cent on that.'

131joannasephine
Moving Pictures – the one-question exam paper prepared especially for Victor, which Ponder Stibbons ended up with instead.
133joannasephine
Hooray!
Ok, this is either going to go easily or take a very long time:
“Nice roses, though,” said the Dean.

136joannasephine
No, and no.
138justjim
Ah, the Bursar is always ready with "Eringyas' Surprising Bouquet". It doesn't really help in Reaper Man though.
139joannasephine
Indeed it does not. Take it away Jim!
140justjim
Oh, that would be me! Sorry for the delay.
In a similar vein, although not, I promise you, from the same book...
The Bursar, who had been properly brought up, said, "Hooray, there's a rosebush?"

"The shark didn't think much. Sharks don't. Their thought processes can largely be represented by "=". You see it = you eat it."
150Artur
No, not Small Gods.
153Artur
No, it's not The Light Fantastic or Jingo.
155Artur
You've got it, pinkozcat. The shark in question is about to try eating the Luggage as it goes by. Over to you...
156pinkozcat
Yes - I knew that it involved the Luggage but it took me a while to work out which book it was.
Here goes:
She always prided herself on being as ordinary as muck, but there was ordinary and there was ordinary.

159pinkozcat
No - not Unseen Academicals and not Maskerade.

163pinkozcat
No, not Wintersmith
165pinkozcat
No, not The Wee Free Men either
166joannasephine
We’re starting to run out of witch books … Witches Abroad?
167MrsLee
Headed in a whole other direction, Moving Pictures?
168justjim
I'll try to rule out another Witches book, Lords and Ladies?
169pinkozcat
joannasephine has it - it is from Witches Abroad.
"Here they were being jostled, as if they were ordinary. Only Nanny Ogg's warning hand on Granny Weatherwax's arm was keeping a dozen jovial drinkers from unnatural amphibianhood and even Nanny's usually very elastic temper was beginning to twang.

Thank you joannesephine! This might be too easy but here goes:

Then I'll fall back onto my default answer; Unseen Academicals?
175anatwork.k
No...not Unseen Academicals either!
Tell me when I should start giving hints...or another quote from the same book.

BTW, sorry about the delay. I went to the snuff book reading in NYC on Thursday and then had guests.

anatwork.k - How about starting a new thread to tell us more about the event you went to? I know I would love to hear about it!
182pinkozcat
Perhaps someone could pick up the baton and get this thread going again. I am not sure what the protocol is or I would do it myself.
183joannasephine
Your turn, Orangez.
184Orangez
Nice!
An easy one to get this going again:
"REMIND ME AGAIN, he said, HOW THE LITTLE HORSE-SHAPED ONES MOVE."

188MrsLee
Nope, Interesting Times.
189anatwork.k
I second Interesting Times
191eclecticdodo
Jingo?
192pinkozcat
Since we are talking of small things - Small Gods?
195pinkozcat
Ah, Orangez, now I see why you said that it was easy; the clue was in the quote itself. :)
Here is a random quote from a random book. It is not so easy:
The presence of those seeking the truth is infinitely to be preferred to those who think they've found it.

Thief of Time, yes?
201pinkozcat
Thief of Time no, sorry
202KayEluned
The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents? Just because I can't remember anyone using this book yet, so it might qualify as 'random book' K : )
203pinkozcat
LOL - no not The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents either.
204anatwork.k

We need more! I'm completely stumped. Lol.

Try this one
"...., the master of the music, had described **********'s voice as putting him in mind of a disappointed vulture arriving too late at the dead donkey."
From the first Discworld novel that I read.

Ok:

219anatwork.k
Snuff?! I am almost (but not quite) certain. :)
220anatwork.k
Hang that, I'm pretty certain.
221joannasephine
Still no!
223pinkozcat
I'll go right out on a limb with The Wee Free Men.
226anatwork.k
Oooh...Interesting Times!. Is it allowed to have more than one guess running at the same time? :s
227pinkozcat
No - but you can edit your reply if you change your mind - but only before it is read by the person giving the quote.
230anatwork.k
Yeah I remembered after the previous poster said The Last Hero and I thought of Teach and the Silver Horde. :)
#227 Can I keep that in mind for next time around? I shall await judgment.

I'm happy for you to have this turn, so post away!

Pyramids it is! All yours, Ardagor!
248Ardagor
I means, said the troll, do you have any beer, spirits, wines, liquors, hallucinogenic herbage or books of a lewd or licentious nature?
249anatwork.k
Moving Pictures? I cannot remember this at all!
250Ardagor
No, not Moving Pictures.
252Ardagor
No, not The Light Fantastic either.
256anatwork.k
Cool, when the wizards are going to Lancre for the wedding right?
Also, I just went recently so perhaps someone else would like a go? First one to read this posts a quote! :)

257pinkozcat
anatwork.k, I think that you should nominate someone (not me) because we will all hang back and pretend that we haven't read your post yet.
258anatwork.k
Ok, I nominate ronincats in the interests of expedience. :) I will leave her a message to that effect.
259ronincats
Bah, humbug!
No, no, that wasn't the quote.
