Hi, I just wanted to pick people's brains. My first Masters essay has to be loosely based on 9/11 and can be a mixture of films, fiction and non-fiction. I've read Falling Man, The Reluctant Fundamentalist, The Road, The Terror Dream and some critical work. I've watched World Trade Centre, 11'09'01, United 93 and Farenheit 93. I have some ideas but what do you think a good topic could be or other books/films you could recommend?

I was thinking maybe females with Falludi's Terror Dream and Backlash, Handmaid's Tale too?
Or the images of 9/11 and how it's dealt with? The Road? Falling Man?
Or struggling with identity? Falling Man?

Any ideas at all, even if just a book you've read, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Kate

I'm afraid I don't have any good ideas regarding this but I did just read a very disturbing and evocative short story that dealt with 9/11 (in a rather oblique slipstreamish sort of way as the author is a dark fantasist): 'The Goat Variations' in Jeff VanderMeer's collection, The Third Bear.

There's also a sequel of a kind that appeared in issue 9 of the the literary magazine, Black Clock, and is available (in a really badly formatted version) on Jeff VanderMeer's homepage: http://www.jeffvandermeer.com/2009/06/01/fiction-the-goat-variations-redux-from-... You can find a much more readable version (same text, much better formatting) here: http://www.homepagedaily.com/Pages/article7291-goat-variations-redux.aspx

Good luck with your essay!

Happy to recommend the stunning Incendiary by Chris Cleave. Good luck!

Kate,
What topic did you pick? How did it turn out? Is it uploaded anywhere, like Academia.edu perhaps?
I'm late to the party, but it sounds like it would be a very interesting read, to say the very least.
Cheers,
Amy
