Have you gone in the past, lilithcat? I don't see hours posted, and am curious if it's really down to dregs on the last day, etc.
ETA See the hours now, in the left-hand column: 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM. That effectively rules me out during the week, unfortunately.

I have gone in the past, and, while the last day is pretty dreg-ish (if that's a word - if not, it is now!), I did cop a few good things.

I worked in Regenstein from 1992 to 1997, and this sale was always a bit hit or miss for me. I have to go down there at some point before Thanksgiving to get a book, though I don't know whether I'll be able to go during sale hours.

I went once in summer 2006 (?) and was underwhelmed. But if it were a little closer to home, I'd go again.

A friend and I went there for the first time on Wednesday ($5 hardbound day) and I was surprised at the slim pickings. I did buy a couple of books (after all, it's a 70 mile round trip), but I'd sooner go to the local libraries (Wheaton, Glen Ellyn, Naperville, e.g.). Maybe I was expecting too much at the Regenstein sale or should have been earlier?
On the sunny side, we did have very good wraps for lunch at Medici Bakery and parked immediately in front of their door with a wizard parallel parking move by this suburban guy.
Do folks that live in or near Hyde Park and are somewhat flexible on time try to hit it on the first day and then later in the sale?
On (another) side note, I love Hyde Park; the architecture, restaurants and U of C food service (some), U of C generally, music and other things to do, ambience, 57th Street Art Fair (God bless Higgins Glass!), the whole enchilada. I'm a former South Shore area kid.
