Has anyone figured out a clever and easy way to track their short story reading? I'm thinking either on LT, or elsewhere (possibly on . . . paper. A journal, perhaps?) I'm thinking of taking on a short story personal project for 2012. I have too many anthologies, collections and magazines accumulating. Time to read them and get them either out of my house or into my keep pile.

I guess I could start a parallel ClubRead thread to my usual list of reading--Nickelini's 2012 Books and then Nickelini's 2012 Short Stories. Does anyone have a better solution?

"Cataloging" them isn't as important as just keeping a record of what I've read, who wrote it, and the publication source.

That's an interesting question, Joyce. Lois/avaland was trying to track her short story and "other" reading in her Club Read thread this year, I think; perhaps she has some thoughts on how that worked. I too would find it interesting to track short stories, especially ones from magazines, but I haven't had the discipline to do it. Do you think combining them in one thread with your book reads would be too confusing? If you only want to list them, as opposed to commenting on them, you could dedicate one post in your thread to short stories and keep updating it.

I've started keeping a list on Evernote (free note taking software that syncs to the web) - the advantage of this is that you can see the list on anywhere including your phone (depending on functionality). It also allows you to create links in your notes so if you read a story online you can keep note of where it was or a link to the librarything page. (It's basically a version of Microsoft's OneNote but not as functional (is anything) but One Note doesn't have a decent Android app yet etc).

i have managed to log most of my short story reading from books but a fraction of the things I dip into. All i can suggest is that you try something and if it doesn't work, try something different. i do think 2 threads might make you a bit crazy...

I've been using imbedded links for the story or article title to reference back to either the book or online source I got it from. Kind of a pain but I like being able to go back and see where it came from. I haven't kept up with this system because I buried my short reading in my 1st post. Next year I'm thinking of sprinkling it throughout the thread and usin italics to set it apart.

That's an idea. I'm going to consider it.

Thanks for everyone's ideas. I've decided how I'm going to redesign my Club Read thread in 2012, and I think integrating the short stories into the thread as I read them can work out just fine. (or, if it doesn't I'll adapt).

>7 Nickelini: so, what did you decide? Separating them out or a holistic approach? I prefer the holistic approach as it better represents my reading. I like jargoneer's thread where he includes all kinds of reading, plus author events, various learning experiences and music. I may have to copy that idea.

This year I did a lot of dipping in and out of books, for short fiction but also much nonfiction. I've been experimenting with how to note that reading (I do so much of it, that it's hard to keep up with it).

Yes, I am going to incorporate it all together. I will number the actual books, and short stories and essays will be noted as such. I also decided that I'm going to start including book covers and commenting on them too. I know most people don't care about covers, but I find it fascinating, and it's my thread so I'm going to go to town.
