This thread is for discussion related to Part 1, Book 3 of Don Quixote. It contains 13 chapters and our goal is to complete it in March.

Anyone reading this part yet? I'm just starting. I wanted to get a jump start since it's a longer section than we've had so far. I have to say that it isn't working for me to read a large chunk in a couple of days and then put the book down for a month which is what I did with the first two sections. I'm really losing the flow of the story. So I'm going to try reading a little every day instead. That may or may not put me ahead of our proposed schedule, but I think the book will work better for me that way.

How is everyone else getting along?

I am completely stalled since early Feb! I like your idea of reading a little each day and I should give that a go.

Wow the first chapter of this section really shows Sahnco at his best! It was hilarious

Just finished this section a few minutes ago. I have to say that I never expected so much explicit writing about bodily functions in a classic like this. Perhaps after the bawdy humor of The Canterbury Tales I should have been better prepared for such surprises. I did particularly enjoy the tale of Cardenio and Luscinda, but I'd love to know what happened after Cardenio left (maybe he would have been pleasantly surprised, who knows?). And last but not least, I have to point out that, like Don Quixote, there've been times when I want to strip naked, do cartwheels, and go crazy for crazy's sake. Anyone else?

I just finished this section as well and I totally agree, Jillbone - so much "potty humor". I keep having visions of Mel Brooks movies.

Overall I'm interested and enjoying it, but I'm not finding it as amazing as I thought it might be. I think it's partially because it seems like more of a series of vignettes than what I'm used to in a long novel, which is characters developing and evolving and building of tension in the plot. There's a little of that so far, but not as much as I expected. I need to keep reminding myself how old this book is. I think I keep forgetting because the humor seems kind of modern in a slapstick kind of way.

Anyway, I'll continue with the next section right away. I like reading a little each day instead of one big chunk and then a break.

Hope everyone else is enjoying it!

I've just finished part 3 too, I still haven't made the switch from the audiobook to the hard copy as I'm enjoying the narration so much. I agree that the humour is quite slapstick, I'm really loving it. I'm interested also in how the Cardenio and Luscinda tale could finish up, so hope we get some sort of resolution in Part 4.

I finished this section over the weekend. THis section was hard ofr me to get into, until I got into the Cardenio/Luscinda story. I am enjoying this part, and the enxt few chapters as well.

Way behind the group as I finally finished Part 3 a few days ago. I am finding Don Quixote a nice change of pace to read between books and I was really happy to discover that it took me no time at all to figure out where I had left off with the story two months ago! I have to say, Sancho has more patience than I would for our knight-errant's confused and determined approach to deal with all manner of innocent things as an approach to battle. I am hoping that bringing the curate and the barber into the adventures will add to the story. It is getting a little tedious with just poor Sancho trying to reign in our knight's foolish actions.

>>9 lkernagh:: You're "way behind"? I'm way behind. Just finished Part 3 yesterday. ;-)

Quite agree. Though it is the vignettes that I actually prefer in Don Quixote.

In Part 3 e.g. I much preferred the first half with the shorter (often standalone) adventures. The second half I found duller. Anytime the book starts focusing on long drawn out love stories with a "message" (see also Part 2) it loses me.

>>6 japaul22:/10 One thing I'll say is that I really got into the book when I started the second part and also when I started reading it faster. I thought the second part did a better job of keeping a narrative flow. Just food for thought. Even though there were parts where I was pretty bored, it ended up being a really memorable experience for me.
