What did you think of Pern? It has been ages since I have read one of those books, but I quite enjoyed them at the time.

48MarthaJeanne
Mai 9, 2012, 3:16 am

I reread the Pern books every year or two. Not great literature, but I enjoy them, and they are nice and relaxing. Actually that's why there are no comments on them here.

I generally keep a book in German and a nonfiction book going, alternating 'chapters' (Usually 20-30 pages depending on the particular book). But some of the fiction is fairly heavy, too, so every other fiction book is a reread from one of my favourite series. That makes sure that at least some of my reading is light and easy.

BTW I'll add here that I have just given up on The Strange Ride of Rudyard Kipling Wilson obviously knows the life and works of Kipling backwards and forwards, and has no problem keeping the whole in his mind as he skips around. But I don't and I can't.

But I just bought a spinning wheel so I need to save up for a few months. In the meantime I can also start saving up the yarn to weave with.

Wie das Kind sprechen lernt
I read this in German. In general I found the arguments hard to follow. They either seemed to be so obvious that they could hardly be called a theory or so vague as to be unuseful. Unfortunately, most of the children's speech was translated, making some of the data unhelpful. As Brunner is considered to be an important expert, I might be willing to try the original (It's a short book), with the thought that some of the shortcomings might be due to translation.
I would be a lot more convinced if his data included children from different backgrounds. Review

The third sister
Only of interest to those who know Austen as little as the author.

Gestrandet oder gelandet?
Interesting.

Still Me

Sense and Sensibility

Topics about which I know nothing
These stories are very wierd. The last one is way over the bounds of what I consider acceptable. Review.

The life of Evelyn Underhill

Das große Bücherbär-Geschichtenbuch für Erstleser

This Scepter'd Isle

Circle Line : Around London in a small boat
OK, I know it isn't really about narrowboats, but it is about canals and rivers in England, and it mentions narrowboats now and again, and if it weren't for narrowboats I probably wouldn't have bought it, so it belongs in that category. Reviewed.

The Little Prince
I read it again because I couldn't remember it at all. I'm sure that in a few weeks if not days I will have forgotten it again. I really don't know what all the fuss is about.

Don Juan : der Mann, den die Frauen liebten
Another example of very long German fiction. This one is very well written, but falls apart at the end.

999 Froschgeschwister ziehen um
Very cute.

30 Minute Vegetarian Mexican Cookbook (abridged)

Arrows of the queen

Die gefiederte Schlange
I enjoyed this one. Told by a Spaniard whose ship went down on the coast of Yacatan 8 years before other Spaniards landed.

'Tis : a memoir
Talk about boring. If he wants to live the picture of the Irish as spending most of their time running from one pub to another, why write a book about it?

The stranger's child
Even more boring. At least in 'Tis I knew who the characters were and when and where things were happening. In this book I didn't, although it may have been beside the point as usually nothing was. Reviewed.

Arrow's flight

The water road : an odyssey through England by narrowboat
Anonther good narrowboat book.

Verschwörung beim Heurigen
A krimi even I enjoyed. Wine, politics, windsurfing and ecology on Neusiedlersee.

The Borrowers

Anglican theology
Not what I was expecting, but very good.

The patchwork girl

Infidel

Finding Jesus in Dharma
Well, now I know why I couldn't remember reading this before. Not very useful. The author complains of other writers using terms as they wish, but he never explains what he means by Dharma, so it ends up beeing anything he approves of. Review.

Winds of fate

How to write really badly
This was cute.

Die Magier, die Tiere und der Mantel Mariens
I got tired of trying to follow which picture was being described. It was not clear, and some of the descriptions were not of pictures in the book. Review.

Hiding in the mirror
I keep hoping that if I keep reading about this stuff, someday it will start to make sense. Not this time.
