How Far They Fall

It's been right around four years since John Edwards's presidential candidacy ended in 2008. Little did Edwards know that the end of his campaign would turn out to be the highlight of the last four years of his life.

And now this.

It's rather sad when you feel compelled to take the word of an accused prostitute over a United States Senator in a case of he said, she said.

Yeah, we really dodged a bullet with that guy. If Kerry had won in 2004, he would have been a heartbeat from the presidency. I just finished Resiliance by Elizabeth Edwards, but haven't posted it on LT yet. I've been using Goodreads and Bookcrossing a lot more lately.
There was also testimony that Edwards told one staffer to "go f**k himself" when his judgement was questioned. All that being said, the guy probably is being hit a little too hard by the law. If Bunny Mellon wants to be a nitwit, whose business is it? I wish so many rich people would stop supporting heckbirds like this. If you read her reasoning, it's nothing but the most superficial and silly, same type of stuff that got Obama elected.

It is amazing to me this guy apparently fooled Elizabeth for an entire marriage. Or was she part of the ambition and the act as well?

Fooled all his staffs for his entire career?

Was he just that good at his act that he could fool everyone all the time?

And my gut feeling is that he differs from others in the political game only by degree. Bretsky1, I would likely take the word of an accused prostitute over that of a US Senator more times than not.

When I said "silly and superficial", I was referring to Bunny Mellon,not the late Elizabeth Edwards. From what I can gather from Resiliance, what she knew about the affair was only he tip of the iceberg. There was a lot she wasn't told, and Young, the king of slime, helped this cause. She claims that the healthcare issue was so important to her that she felt he should run no matter what. This is hard for conservatives, who consider their view on healthcare to be completely wrongheaded, to understand, but that's what she claimed. Also Hillary, Obama and other Democrat frontrunners had largely the same position on healthcare, so maybe it was just blind ambition. Frankly, I couldnot have been married to a man who made a living as the type of lawyer he was and who believed in the "two Americas" b.s. There's no accounting for taste. but now, assuming he is still with Rielle Hunter, he has found a woman who is a true moral relativist, soit's probably a good match.

Remember how cool his backers thought he was? Now nobody will admit that they were ever for him.LOL I always thought that he seemed a little too slick to be for real.

richard- you bring up an interesting point about fooling his staff. I think we have seen that many times the staff will close around the politican and try to protect him. They either believe in his program or seeing him/her rise as a way to rise themselves.

As for the campaign staff, I wonder how many of them actully have much contact with the candidate?

As for the law hitting him a little hard, I sort of agree, but remember the trial isn't about his affair. It's about him diverting funds. I would say a few months jail time if he is convicted.

Did we just open the way for politicians to use more compaign contributions for personal purposes, even to keep up a mistress?
