India and Pakistan announced today the opening of another border crossing, which they intend to help increase trade between them. You'd think that two countries that share not just a border but a deep culture and thousands of years of history would accidentally wind up being at least one of each other's top three trade partners, but that's sadly not the case. According the U.S. Department of Commerce, Pakistan isn't even in India's top 15 for trade partners, and India is only eighth on Pakistan's list.

Part of the overwhelming poverty that each country suffers from probably has quite a bit to do with the lack of trade between them, especially for Pakistan, which is much more dependent on exporting manufactured goods than is India.
