Putting aside the Gor series of novels and their place in the lives of some, I would like hear from the kinky readers amongst us as to their thoughts on SF and Fantasy. Can we expect to see BDSM practices and beliefs portrayed with some accuracy in an alternate world setting? Is this a way that some of us prefer to get our reading kicks?

Is the poly society created in the alternate worlds by Heinlein one to which the poly amongst us aspire? Or its just a means by which we can see that this is an option for society presented in a format that is acceptable to the mainstream reader?

Your thoughts, comment and recommended reading are welcomed.

Try Morgan Hawke - especially Victorious Star and Fallen Star for some good SF BDSM - these are part of her most hard core series. I love Hungry Spirits, which I would classify as Urban Fantasy, and which is lighter. She has a number of very nice short stories as well.

Cerise Sinclair has two shapeshifter books that are light BDSM and one SF. Sinclair's pure romances are very good at portraying the realities of the BDSM world and the challenges of consensuality.

Angela Knight, of course, has a whole series of SF BDSM romances. The Velderet is a classic, though I only recently found out about it.

I think SF and Fantasy are among the more welcoming genres for both BDSM and poly stories. You still have to wade through a lot of crap to find the good writing and good plotting, but I feel as if these genres offer a better return on investment.

Whether or not they're accurate, I can't say, but Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel's Dart series certainly treats DBSM and polyamory very sympathetically and thoroughly. I've read all 9 (3 trilogies) and thought they were brilliant, although of course some were stronger than others, and the last 3 books don't have as much in the way of BDSM.

There's several fairly reasonably-priced copies of Thorns by Josephine Scott which is a well-written, but disturbing BDSM science fiction novel. My review with spoilers.
