As probably all cats, my cats love sitting on things. Or sometimes in things (bags, boxes, freezers), but mostly on. And sometimes on books, which occasionally makes for comical sights (read the titles!).

Funny! And what gorgeous eyes your cat has!
Lying on something seems to imply ownership, so they are staking a claim whenever they lie on something.
Getting in something (like a box, bag) seems more like a 'nesting' urge.... ;)

#3: He's little over a year now, he was about half a year old when I took the second/third picture.

This is my late cat Sasha in one of his favorite bookshelves.

#5: I thought he was a baby kitty in those pics. So cute! I always wonder what my cat looked & acted like as a kitten. I adopted her as a young adult cat (although she still acts like a baby most times!).
9bostonbibliophile
thanks :) he was my little pal for 10 years. i miss him so much! but we did get lots of wonderful photos and memories of course.

So cute! Great shot, dud5ers.

>13 fuzzi: Glad you like them. The photo is from 1986! and they are still staggering. I must fix them one day.
15fuzzi
It wasn't the position of your books I was referring to, but how the shelves are on the wall...I can see how it would help keep the books from falling off without bookends. :)
16dud5ers
It was not so scientific - just that the shelves were too long to fit end to end and I should have shortened them. I have done so except for one shelf that coincides with a light switch. I've got used to it. Caddy used to hide behind the books then take a short cut through the books by pushing a few of them out onto the floor. If I was sitting beneath it could be painful. Here I caught her red-handed.
18Amtep
Hmm I staggered my bookshelves because I like the look :) It makes the wall-o-books seem less intimidating.
It also provides great behind-the-books climbing joy for the cats, but the bookshelves predate the cats.

It is not really a book, but here is my cat reading the newspaper: http://imgur.com/sXKpS

26 - gilroy - I see your cat likes The Joy of Birding and North American Birds. The other title I can read is Long After Midnight - could be a story there in the titles.
30fuzzi
(28) And one other book appears to be The Confession by John Grisham.

Its a Confession to me that he wants to go out long after midnight to experience the joy of birding with North american birds .

That is so clever, gilroy! Thanks for sharing the smile.
Speaking of smiles I love the grin on #24. Whatever he's reading it's good.
Thanks to gilroy I'm going to have to see if I can find interesting piles of books for my two cats to peruse......

@32:
It's most of the time him or his sister lying in my lap while I read.
They both have this happy face they make when they feel cosy. ;)

Tommy, not on reading books, but chasing my pen around my maths homework. I was 13, he was a few months old.

#35 There's so much to love in this picture, starting with your crooked tie!
Homework has never looked so adorable and fun.

Kathadrion thanks for sharing the photo of the handsome Sune. The subject matter sounds perfect for him. What an interesting name!
dud5ers--another great photo. To my American eyes, that shot could have been taken at Hogwarts

Oops, Dudley,
I was going to ask you if that cat was still alive...
But after checking your profile, I had a closer look at your picture.
Lets see, Pen and Ink, hand written homework, no Laptop and that old fashioned 'jumper' I well remember.
Yep, a few years ago now :-)

1964. It was a different world. Did I really wear school uniform at home to do my homework? Perhaps I couldn't wait to get it over with as quickly as possible. But behind me is my stamp collection - waiting for me afterwards. Tommy's dates were 1964-1975. He was all black, the smallest of a litter of sturdy little grey tabbies, and the noisiest. I think we kept him because no-one else would want him!

Well, I finally found it, and it wasn't exactly as I remember it. It is in my Photobucket account but not on my computer. Kitten while still a kitten would climb to the top of my back porch's bookcase to spend a few hours there. Here he is up there, but there are no books showing to prove it.
Forgive me for posting it anyway. I like to see pictures of my Kitty.

The tongue alone is worth the price of admission, Robert! And the pic of Wendy is also great!

I was tempted to "gently slide a book" under my sleepings cats, and 'snap' them, just now when I read the above.
BUT that would be cheating...
and I would have to expell myself from our group!

Guido, you obviously don't have enough books lying around! Hard to believe you have 3.900+ titles and can't catch one of your cat's on them. You should set out a 'trap'! :)
57jane.oldaker
Mine are only interested if I am trying to read them. Then they're all over it!
58dud5ers
Just leave one on the floor. Something long and thin like an atlas. Anything made of paper or card is, apparently, much more comfortable to lie on than carpet if you are a cat.
59fuzzi
Beware, though...fabric and paper are also attractants to cats, and some choose to 'mark' them...
60Seanie
I dont have any pics of Taj & Tilly on books, I might try leaving a few faves laying around & hope I can get some tho - good thinking dud5ers!
But I was given this gorgeous music box for a christmas present today & had to share it somewhere, here seemed as appropriate as anywhere:

Seanie - wonderful, and I love the book titles!
65staffordcastle
It is by Charles Wysocki, and is available in many formats - one of these days I want to get the jigsaw puzzle!
66Seanie
Oh I knew the pic was familiar too, thanx for letting us know the artist staffordcastle!
I just googled Charles Wysocki & he has some gorgeous art & yes in many formats! The pic above even was even available in a stained glass lamp shade at one stage!!! Thankfully for my bank balance its no longer available that I can find, lol, but I think I'd like a print of this for my study one day:
In the mean time, I've just ordered the book :)
Also came across Geoff Tristram's art, this one's lovely:

Seanie Leave the box there and you can CAtch a real cat there.
70staffordcastle
Love it!
71anna_in_pdx
69: 67 looks like that same Wysocki guy mentioned in 65. Based on what I can see of the signature.
My only issue with this guy is that the cats look like in order to curl around those books in the bookcase picture, they'd have to be as long as ferrets.

Gilroy, Charles Wysocki is the artist, and you can Google his site.
The prints are expensive, but you can get a calendar and frame them yourself.

73Seanie
Its not quite 'on' a book & its a bit dark & grainy, but how cute is this:
She curled up like that last night & I oh so slowly crept out of bed to get the camera - hoping that she'd stay there instead of follow me - & not only did she stay there, she posed as if reading for me, lol :)

74guido47
But why is she staring at the chapter number?
Perhaps she is wondering "how much more of this do I have to read" before before Seanie stops taking my picture?

76Tanglewood
She is very pretty. My cats often defeat me on the picture front, running away while go hunt for the camera.
78framboise
I love this pic! What a great snapshot! Looks like she's thinking, "Only up to chapter 26??"
79anna_in_pdx
Beautiful as always, Seanie! She really does look like she is reading.
81reconditereader
I think 77 and 80 have it right! Did she reach out a paw?
82Seanie
Well if you look at her paws you can see she was actually playing with the toggle, lol, just happened to look up & I snapped at the right time :)
83Amtep
But that's such a great reading-cat picture... is there any possibilty to have it as the picture for this group?
85anna_in_pdx
HA! They even picked one off of this thread! The top one of rfb's beautiful cat, in fact. That is, actually, a totally gorgeous picture. Those eyes!
86staffordcastle
Heh - good eyes, Anna - I didn't read the captions!
87brochettes
I've never posted a picture on a thread before, so hope this works:

brochettes, you can make the picture larger by adding 'width=500' before the final carrot bracket.

How did they get them to behave long enough to get that photo? I try that with my five and it's flying fur and paws of furry!
#94
Oh, no. The black cat is a space hog. Just like mine. :>

Huh.

97Seanie
I'm guessing they used reverse psychology, if they had tried to put the kitties there, no way would the pic have worked :)
So I reckon the just said repeatedly "No Kitties on the bookshelf" & voila!

To train my cat, Kitten, to come in at night I rewarded him with Fancy Feast in the morning. He decided to disdain Fancy Feast.

How annoyingly odd. Maybe you are giving the wrong flavor? Gracie refuses to eat any of the grilled flavors. Puss and Boots and Willow are happy with anything.
128Mr.Durick
I buy it by the case from Costco, and it is every flavor in that case. He used to like it; hearing the little can crack open he would jump around to get close to it. He has also pretty much given up on Feline Greenies which used to be a reward. He started coming here, probably introduced by his mom and later with his older brothers, for canned Friskies; now only occasionally will he dig in although he will bury it in newspaper.
So I give him a non-nutritional treat which he is avid for if he is here in the morning or comes when called, and I give him full food value Temptations treats when I am feeling good about giving him stuff. He gets at least a taste of almost anything I eat if he's around, but he's taken up disdaining those too.
He is healthy and active. I suspect he gets food from someone else in the neighborhood. I guess it is annoying because I want to be in control and because I want to be appreciated.

129: I had a cat once that used to run to the table each night. No matter where she was in the house, how deeply she was sleeping, the sound of the table being set would cause her to magically appear. The last person to arrive at the table would have to share their chair with her. I miss that brat.
