Has anyone purchased or seen this in person? Online it looks tempting, my Kindle is a Keyboard model, and I am considering upgrading. Any comments would be welcome!

My wife gave me a paperwhite for Christmas. My granddaughter has my K1 and I still have my Keyboard model 3.
The backlight is the reason I wanted it--the whole page is illuminated and it does not require any add on light. The Amazon cover (with magnet closure) automatically puts the book to sleep (with no battery drain) Nd opens your book to the last page you were reading when it was closed.
I don't care about the "8-day" battery life. The fine print says that assumes 1/2 hour of reading per day (I.e., 4 hours.

Thanks for the warning about the paperwhite battery-life. Why is that, do you know? The lighting (I assume)? Anyway, I'm still on my K3 and when I have to replace it I'll get whatever is currently the closest model to K3.

And congratulations about your K1. I've misplaced mine around the house somewhere and wish I could find it, at least for sentiment's sake. It was a great piece of hardware for sturdiness, though the OS/software left a lot to be desired.

>2 donandpatti: & 3 regarding battery life:

It says 8 week battery life, which is similar to the KK, if I recall correctly.

Well now we have the updated paperwhite, I would really love one for xmas. I have had a look at the screen resolution and it is much sharper than the "keyboard" kindle I now use...so it is tempting to me as my eyesight is not as sharp as it used to be :((

One problem I'm having with my Paperwhite (which I've had a little while, so it may not be "updated") is that word searches don't work. Even on a small file I still get "not found" results (or whatever you call them) for a word that I absolutely know is in the file. I've still got a K3, though, so I can always use that for a word search on a book if I'm really that serious about finding something.

A precaution if thinking about buying a Paperwhite: if there is more than one Paperwhite registered to the same Amazon account in your family it is not possible, as far as I can tell, to turn off what Amazon calls "Cloud Synchronization": this means it is not possible to have different Collections or books on individual PW's; what appears on one appears on all devices registered to the account. In other words, each reader cannot use his or her Paperwhite independently. We had Kindle Keyboards before and each device could be used independently; this appears not to be possible with the Paperwhite. If there is anyone out there who might know how to get around this, it would be good to know how it might be done!

Wow, that's too bad. I was thinking of going to the PW this fall from my beloved KK. The people on the MobileRead kindle boards are usually pretty up to date on these technical issues (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=140). It might be worth asking them.

I do know the storage space on the PW is half (2 GB) the keyboard, which I am trying to accept.
