Anyone here who can't empathise with this?

I must admit I'd never heard of Fiona Apple before today but I love her already.

aww - brings back memories. I hope Janet has an easy passing, glad Fiona plans to be there for her.

We've cancelled a holiday before now (no refund) because our elderly dog was unwell and it all seems perfectly normal to me but I still hear of people who hasten their pet's end just so that they can have their annual jaunt. One couple I once heard of even had their slightly unwell dog put to sleep (against the advice of the vet) becuase they didn't want it to spoil a party they were planning. However, it's when you mention these things to other people who don't themselves have pets that you start getting the weird looks (what? you would rearrange your life just to accommodate a smelly old dog?) I'm so glad that this particular instance is getting so much publicity at the moment because I sometimes feel that many pet owners instinctively want to do this kind of thing but are intimidated aginst it by those who simply don't understand. Let's make it known to everyone that when you take on responsibility for another life, that life has to come first.
And if I had bought a ticket to Ms Apple's concert I would not be asking for a refund. Bless her!

I never liked her early music – more for the content than her voice – but this is such a kind and loving thing to do that it gives me a new perspective of her.
And I'm astonished to read in your posts that there are people who would put a recoverable animal down just for a vacation or party! For Pete's sake, just board the dog at the vet's (though, like Fiona, I would prefer to be with my babies when it is there time).

#4 I knew nothing about her until I read this but I'm quite taken by her music (the bits I've heard, anyway). There would be something quite fitting if she were to gain a whole load of new fans through this. (BTW, I understand it is the expense of boarding that is the problem with these people but then nobody made them get a dog and if you can't afford to have your pet properly cared for while you're away then you can't afford the holiday, in my book.)

I agree with you all. I am not familiar with Fiona but understand and have great respect for her decision.
It's wonderful to see that there are good people out there and my thoughts and prayers go out to her and Janet.
When you give and take love from a animal their soul becomes part of your own and stays with you.

#5 – I agree wholeheartedly - if you can afford the vacation, you can afford to take care of your dog. Back before I had a decent-paying job, I went several years without a true vacation partly because I couldn't afford to board my pets. I learned to enjoy local state parks where my dogs and I could hike together. :)
