January progress

#1: The Woman Who Died A Lot by Jasper Fforde ... I have only had this on my shelf since last fall. I love this series ... and this one includes librarians who are allowed to deadly force!

#2: When We Were the Kennedys by Monica Wood ... This has been on my electronic shelf since late fall. An engaging portrait of growing up in a Maine paper mill town ... I grew up in one, too!

#3: Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin ... Had this on my shelf since 2006. I had started it before but hadn't gotten far. It was very well done but I did set it down once or twice to take a break with other things.

#4: Cover Story by Gerry Boyle ... Had this on my shelf since last spring. Boyle is a Maine author and has written 2 series set in Maine, but this is the first of his books that I've read. I'll probably see what others the library has.

#5: In the Dark Street Shineth: A 1941 Christmas Eve Story by David McCullough ... This is a very short book that talks about Winston Churchill's visit with FDR on Christmas Eve in 1941 and also tells the background of "O Little Town of Bethlehem" and "I'll Be Home for Christmas."

#6: Jack Maggs by Peter Carey ... I have had this around since 2010. It is a loose spin off of the story of Magwitch, the convict from Great Expectations.

February progress

#7: Absolute Monarchs: A History of the Papacy by John Julius Norwich ... Had this on my shelf for about a year. Very funny that I was reading it when the Pope announced he was stepping down. I really enjoyed this but probably needed to brush up on my European history first. I let a lot of it wash over me but overall it was a good read.

#8: The Revenge of the Radioactive Lady ... by Elizabeth Stuckey-French ... Had this on my shelf for a year.

March progress

#9: Bring Up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel ... Had this on my shelf since May 2012. A great follow up to Wolf Hall. I was going to re-read that before tackling this one but was pleased to find it wasn't necessary. It was a different look at the Ann Boleyn story.

#10: Swamplandia! by Karen Russell ... Had this on my shelf since April 2012. I heard the author speak in Boston, as well. It wasn't what I expected. Not sure yet how I feel about it.

April progress

#11: Pox: An American History by Michael Willrich ... Had this on my shelf for about a year. Heard him speak at the Maine Festival of the Book in 2012.

#12: Mornings on Horseback by David McCullough ... Had this on my shelf since at least 2005.

#13: Congregation: The Journey Back to Church by Gary Dorsey ... Had this on my shelf since at least 2005. Not sure whether I liked it yet or not. It reminded me of my own church in many, many ways.

#14: The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck ... Had this on my shelf since 2006. It was a surprisingly quick read. It doesn't have a fast-paced storyline but it was very good.

#15: Caleb's Crossing by Geraldine Brooks ... Had this on my shelf for a year. Excellent historical fiction.

May progress

#16: The Gift of Rain by Tan Twan Eng ... Had this on my shelf since last summer. Set in Malaya during World War II. A good read but I liked the first half better than the last.

#17: When Will There Be Good News? by Kate Atkinson ... Had this on my shelf for a year. This is my first book by Atkinson. I will probably pick up another.

#18: The Youngest General: A Story of Lafayette by Fruma Kasdan Gottschalk ... Had this on my shelf for several years. A wonderful old children's history/biography that I got at a library sale. This covers Lafayette's childhood up through the American Revolution.

#19: The Marquis de Lafayette: Bright Sword of Freedom by Hodding Carter ... Another great children's history/biography. This focuses on his involvement in the American and French Revolutions and after.

#20: Mudbound by Hillary Jordan ... Had this on my shelf for a while. Glad I finally read it because it was good!

#21: Suddenly, the Cider Didn't Taste So Good by John Ford ... Great stories about life as a Maine game warden!

#22: The Story of the War of 1812 by Colonel Red Reeder ... Another old children's history book that I picked up at a library sale a few years ago.

June progress

#23: The Reservoir by John Milliken Thompson ... Had this on my shelf for a while. Very good.

#24: Natural Elements by Richard Mason ... My first of his books. Very good.

#25: So Much for That by Lionel Shriver ... Had this on my shelf for a pick. Picked it up because I loved We Need To Talk about Kevin. Didn't enjoy this one as much. Too much of a rant, which kind of killed the story for me.

August progress

#27: The Double Bind by Chris Bohjalian ... Had this on my e-shelf for a while. Finally read it when my book group picked it. Very good.

#28: Home by Marilynne Robinson ... Had this on my shelf for a while. I re-read Gilead in preparation for this one since they tell the same story ... Gilead from the perspective of John Ames and Home from the perspective of the Boughtons. Very good!

September progress

#29: Christine Falls by Benjamin Black ... Have had this on my shelf for a few years and didn't realize it was part of a series. I might have to look for the others!

October progress

#30: Troubles by J. G. Farrell ... I read his Empire Trilogy backwards. I started with The Singapore Grip then The Siege of Krishnapur and now finally Troubles. I have had this on my shelf for several years. I finally picked it up because I had just read Christine Falls, which was also set in Ireland. It wasn't until I pulled the book from my shelf that I realized the introduction was by John Banville ... who actually wrote Christine Falls under the name Benjamin Black.

#31: Blood, Bones, and Butter by Gabrielle Hamilton ... Had this on my shelf for a while. It was pretty good. More personal and less chef-y than I thought it would be.

#32: The Imperial Cruise: A Secret History of Empire and War by James Bradley ... Got this from my sister and finally read it. Interesting look at Teddy Roosevelt's secret dealings with Korea and Japan.

#33: Your Call Is (not that) Important to Us: Customer Service and What It Reveals About Our World and Our Lives by Emily Yellin ... I work in customer service so picked this up a couple of years ago. An interesting look at how customer service has changed, outsourcing, technologies, etc.

#35: God Is Not One: The Eight Rival Religions That Run The World by Stephen Prothero ... Had this on my shelf for a while. Pretty good overview.

December progress

#36: The Eagle of the Ninth by Rosemary Sutcliff ... This is a book I got from SantaThing last year but never read. Very good. I may need to get the next in the series.

#37: Chosen by a Horse: How a Broken Horse Fixed a Broken Heart by Susan Richards ... Another book I got from SantaThing but never got around to reading. A touching memoir and reflection about a horse/person relationship.

Oh yes, do continue with Rosemary Sutcliff. I loved them as a teenager and I still think they're magical, thirty years later.
