"If God did not exist, it would be necessary to __ __ __ __ __ Her." --attrib. to Voltaire*
* I've seen/heard this quoted only in English. I don't know if the main verb is "faudrait" or "aurait fallu ".
I'm assuming that the French pronoun of which the antecedent is "God" would be "L' ", which could mean "Him", "Her, or "It", when followed by an infinitive
("inventer"); if it had been a past participle, then the gender would have to have been revealed.

It just ticks me off when I don't win, for example, when burnish is history.

13rodneyvc
#12 I'm not sure how racy I'm prepared to imagine, or to admit to, but I'm sucking mud on that one!
14bookblotter
#12 & #13 Sucking mud must be Australian slang, I've not heard it before. Do they have fig newtons, a cookie, down under? Or, to approach it another way, a _ _ _ _ _ _ _ of your imagination.
I would have to guess that it isn't Crambo or you would have come up with it right away.

15rodneyvc
#14 We don't have fig newtons - the Arnott's Spicy Fruit Roll (which is more pillow-shaped than a roll) is possibly the closest you'll get. Cookies are better known as biscuits, and what you may know as a biscuit, I think, are called scones. My vague recollection is "sucking mud" was a Star Trek reference - “Shut her down Scotty, she's sucking mud again!” which may have been popularised in a computer error message, but was possibly originally a navy term. Then again, as you suggest, it could all have been a figment of my imagination.

Also, I'm the only living American with zero knowledge of Star Trek. Had I Star Trek learning, I would have known the reference in an infinitesimal time period.

28rodneyvc
#27 The "Alpha not" is the list of unsuccessful guesses in alphabetical order to make it easier to spot if a word you are thinking of suggesting has already been suggested. I use the "Not" list for excluded words in chronological order for people to see what I though the word was that they were proposing - sometimes I get it wrong. I'm not going to relent - apply the ointment and if numbness persists consult a practitioner.

#52 Touché Roland! Crambo's word is indeed nescient, which the Oxford defines as "lacking knowledge; ignorant" and gives as an example of its use "I ventured into the new Korean restaurant with some equally nescient companions".
I thought that this was very appropriate for Crambo as we are (almost) all nescient until the answer is revealed or guessed, and then we become ignorant again! Well done!
