Book BINGO

I guess I'll start with the easiest one . . . A book from the library as most of my books this year have been from the library, the only decision is which one to choose. But I'll select my favourite one so far which is The Dinner.

Ok, well I'm working on A book with more than 400 pages right now. Go A Tale of Genji, all 1100 pages of it.

I was debating on doing the Bingo, but I think I'll jump in - nice to have others joining in.

A book by a Celebrity - in my world Authors are celebrities - so they count right?

I'll be doing this, but not comprehensively: if I read a book that fits a category, I'll be happy, but I won't be aiming to "win" or anything. :) I'm also doing this retrospectively, so I'm counting books I've already finished this year. And I'm okay if a book falls into more than one category.

So far I have:

A book with an animal on the cover: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - Hedwig can be seen in the car with Harry and Ron.
A book from the library: So many! :) A Confusion of Princes, Curse of the Thirteenth Fey, The Silver Door, Mr Darcy's Undoing and The One Hundred Year Old Man Who Climbed out of the Window and Disappeared.
A young adult novel: Again, Harry Potter but also A Confusion of Princes, The Thirteenth Fey, and The Silver Door.
A book that's been on your shelf for more than five years: Harry Potter (although it's been read multiple times) and Gulliver's Travels
A book someone recommends to you: I think I can count The One Hundred Year Old Man, given all the buzz from this group. :)

Some categories are much easier than others! :)

I run the web presences for my local, independent, bookstore, so I end up always giving THEM recommendations! I don't have any books that have been on the shelf (unread) for five years either.

#10 ~ I'm not Judy, but there are no library thing police, so do whatever works for you. I'm playing this retroactive to Jan 1, but that's just me. I can also tell you right now that there is probably a 0% chance that any barista will recommend a book to me, although I won't completely discount that possibility.

Great idea! I live in Canada, and Margaret Atwood is a celebrity here (at least in my circles), and I plan to read at least one book by her this year, so that solves that one.

Okay, I changed one of mine because a book I'm reading now fits in better. So The book because of the cover (originally The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time has been changed to an award winning book. And I'll have another one up short for that category. Although, I did choose that edition for it's cover.

The Headmaster's Wager was 397 pages long! Just missed out on the 400 pages category. But, luckily, it is also written by a Canadian author!!

Anyone have any thoughts on the "recommended by celebrity" space? I've no idea how to go about figuring that one out >_>

Also I know at least one other person mentioned having a few spaces they'd not be able to fill, how about a group collaboration to come up with several spare ones to be swapped out for when needed?

I think if I'm creative, I can manage most of the categories. There are a lot of "recommendations" on there though--I read very few recommendations. And certainly none from a barista. I guess if someone I know recommends a book to me, and also makes me a cup of coffee, I can work with that. I just have to remember! I think next year we should come up with our own BINGO card from scratch.

I don't drink coffee, or tea, and am a total loner, though, so... lol. My husband recommended the one, as it's one of the few he owned before we got together and he loves it and I just happened to read it like a week ago lol, so I lucked out there. But certainly no bookseller or barista recs (and I don't normally do them either, though mentions by people I do take notice of lol), no radio (and even when I had one I've never once heard one mentioned on it!), and I have no career, lol.

I think I'll snag a couple of Mabith's ideas for the ones that don't fit. May replace the cover one also since I don't pay a bit of attention to them aside of that they're in pristine condition (or as close to it, if used) and just picked one that I think I semi-noticed from the cover but certainly did not choose because of it. So thanks for the ideas! :))

# - Good idea! I'm reading Best Laid Plans, which won a few years ago. I'll have to look up who championed it, and use it for this Bingo slot. I wouldn't have thought of it.

ETA: I looked it up and Ali Velshi was the "celebrity" for Best Laid Plans. It says he's a CNN journalist. Whatever. It'll work.

I have found that the internet has helped me quite a bit in finding challenging slots to fill. But I am also attempting this with books from my own shelves so that makes it doubly challenging. I am fairly an agoraphobic so that makes the 'book you saw someone reading' difficult. I do get at coffee occasionally when returning from driving the grandsons to school but would have to ask my barista for a rec. But the others I have waiting and ready to be read. I am now at 10 of 24. It does take time as I am sure that we all have other books that we need/want to read such The Lovely Bones which I am currently reading for my monthly Orange read.
And is it okay if we don't actually have a Bingo board? I don't have the foggiest idea of how to do that. (no techie here :-(

Except for the library slot, I'm doing mine all from my TBR pile and combining it with my TBR challenge. I may not get every space filled in, but I find the fun in this is the trying. I'm not going to go out and look for new books to fill any spaces.

Only two of us have boards up, so you'll be in the majority without one. :)

I rarely go anywhere that I would see people reading anything (you don't see it much at the grocery store or drug store), so I'm just doing one of my substitutes. Maybe "A book someone recommended on LT" since I've certainly got a long list of those!

I posted the board on my ROOTS thread: http://www.librarything.com/topic/146762, but I don't know how to fill it in on the screen so it doesn't mean much. I printed out a paper copy and taped it into my book journal and I'm colouring in the squares.

#40 - thanks, but I haven't opened any of the image editing programs on my computer for about four or five years. I would be surprised if they don't just crash my computer! . . . I like my pencil crayons ;-)

I've been wondering what I could put in the "Book that will help with your career" slot as my career is not going to be advancing any time soon ;o) So, with a bit of creative licence, I reckon I could slot in any book I am reading. Because I am a librarian. And surely every book I read, makes me a better one. Doesn't it?

As I am retired and a homemaker now I used a book on cooking. I thought it appropriate and I think that as a librarian every book you read would work for you judy.

The funniest thing about this is how creative everyone is being!

Not swap out things you merely think "well I don't think I like that" but to swap out those you actually could not fulfill. I have no job, so I cannot fulfill something about a career; I don't drink coffee or go in coffee shops and I'm positive no one working in one here would recommend me any books if I did; similar goes for bookseller rec. I am certainly not swapping out anything just because it's not something I usually read a lot of.

For my Barista rec, I used one from her on FaceBook. She had read the book and then she and a bunch of girlfriends who had read it went to the movie based on said book. Safe Haven So I thought I could easily use that one as a rec.
And as you don't work Poly, surely you do things at home; inside, outside, whatever. Do you have a dog or cat you have to take care of? A husband/wife you do things with and for? Many titles (probably on your own shelves) that would fill those.

>51 rainpebble: Again, as I said when you mentioned it above, if I come across one of the books I'm interested in that have to do with food I'd read & count it, but a) I'm reading like 80% off my shelves and have nothing like that and b) I don't have the money to go buying brand new non-fic books and my library doesn't have that sort of thing in English. So I'm not counting on finding something that'd semi-meet that space this year. I'm not sure what your own shelves hold, but I can guarantee you mine hold nothing of that sort at present. I'm well aware of what's on my shelves.

My barista is also a personal trainer. I'm sure what he'd recommend would be something very sporty. Sigh. (Is it wrong to find a new barista because I don't think I'll like this one's book recommendations? ;)

PolymathicMonkey, I'm actually (contemplating) changing the categories to make them somewhat trickier: even in Australia, we seem to have more Canadian authors on the shelves than Kiwi authors. And I'd rather read a Kiwi author, simply because I'm embarrassed how under-represented they are on Australian shelves.

Didn't mean to diss Canadian authors at all! Lovely bunch of writers writing good stuff.

Adding in "non-fiction" would also make it trickier, although leaving in "poetry" would keep it extremely tricky. :)

But I'm not reading to this bingo board anyhow, it's more of a serendipitous event if I get to cross something off. Which reminds me, hello prize winning (and *HIGHLY* recommended) Among Others...

High on my shelves are the the Canadian & the Down Under authors. They seem to bring something to me that feeds my soul so I am quite partial to both.

Well that's annoying. I posted here last night from the tablet and it seems to have disappeared. So, what I said was thanks for the coffee links. I don't drink coffee and I was worried as to how I could forge a relationship with a barista who makes my winter hot chocolates (maybe 5 for the season). SO that gives me a chance there.

Belva it is good to read outside of your culture sometimes. A fresh viewpoint can both relax you and refresh you!

Haha you are funny! I managed to read a book with pictures tonight. It wasn't a particularly good one though.

Just added two to my G list! One with Pictures and a book I'd picked up as a teenager.

I'm counting Neil Gaiman as a celebrity, since he's definitely that now as well as being an author. :)

The Children's Hospital was a great read and at more than 600 pages I can safely add it ti the list!

Just realised that I could add another one. A YA novel. I read Sea Hearts at the beginning of the year and didn't think to add it.

The "Great First Line" one throws me up a bit. I'm never paying that much attention (especially with audiobooks) that I remember once I've finished reading!
