It's hard to find cryptic puzzle book sin the U.S., so I pick them up whenever I can. In case anyone's interested, here's my puzzle collection (sorry. I haven't uploaded cover pics for all of them yet).

I (in UK) never buy the books although for years I've had a go at the cryptic with varying success - "The Times" or "Daily Telegraph". As the paper comes every day 6 days a week (I have a rest on Sundays) I try the puzzle that comes with the paper but that's enough. Sometimes don't have enough time for that as I'm not one of those people that can race through in 30 minutes or less.

>2 PossMan: We have a couple of monthly magazines that routinely have cryptics, notably The Atlantic and The Nation. And I suppose I could subscribe to one of the UK papers online, but as I rarely can finish any of the puzzles, I happily re-use the books I have, finding that when I go back to one of them after a year or two, I've gotten better, and can get more answers.

I don't catalog my puzzle books, because I destroy them in the process of using them, but I can vouch for the high quality of the following variety cryptic collections (links are to Amazon):

The Atlantic Monthly Cryptic Crosswords by Cox and Rathvon. Out of print.

Random House Guide to Cryptic Crosswords by Cox and Rathvon. Out of print.

Henry Hook's Cryptic Crosswords, Volume 2 by Hook. Out of print.

Henry Hook's Cryptic Crosswords, Volume 4 by Hook. Out of print.

National Puzzlers' League Cryptic Crosswords by Kosman and Picciotto. Out of print.

The Atlantic Cryptic Crosswords by Cox and Rathvon. In print!

50 Variety Cryptic Crosswords by Wolff. In print!

The out of print ones are all available on Amazon marketplace. Some of the prices are outrageous, but I'm actually tempted by, say, the $50 current price for Volume 1 of Hook.

>3 sjnorquist: I don't think The Atlantic has cryptics anymore. I cancelled my subscription to the magazine when they stopped carrying them several years ago. I don't like the puzzles in The Nation, because they play by a looser set of rules than I prefer. I like the monthly puzzles in Harper's and went to the trouble of photocopying and working 2 or 3 decades worth of them after I discovered them.

I see that a post from several years ago pointed out that the National Puzzlers' League collection is available for free download. If you like variety cryptics and haven't worked those, you'd be crazy to pass that up!

Yes, I can also vouch for the books mentioned above. Several of them are on my list posted above; I'll try to get covers scanned soon. I save my crossword books because I rarely finish a book, and frequently go back to old ones. Thanks for the update on the Atlantic, I guess I haven't picked done up in a while.

You could resort to the dreaded Amazon (yes, I know, if you're a bookseller that may be like selling your soul); they do have all those British newspaper-based crossword book series though (Times, Telegraph, a few Guardian, etc).
