I'm thinking of a word that rhymes with "horde."

or as my basketball coach used to yell, "Jeeze! and crackers"
Not bored, sword, ward, gored, fjord, aboard, lord
Alpha: aboard, bored, fjord, gored, lord, sword, ward
First hint: Crambo's word has more syllables than any of these guesses.

Oh dear, have I killed it again? I didn't think this word was that unusual but maybe I was wrong. It's a four-syllable noun, and might be found, if not named properly, in any medieval-style fantasy. There's a particularly poignant scene involving one in The Darkest Road.

After I've put my wounded foe out of his suffering, he could lie in the monks' rumpus room.

Jenni, I'm afraid you've stumped me. I remember a few years ago reading about a company that was pushing a combination of those sorts of things as garden food; is your clue related to that? Or a north-of-the-border form of a cord of wood? In any case, good luck finishing your project. And thanks for inviting Starbox, who has hit upon Crambo's word, misericorde, the small dagger used to administer the coup de grace to mortally wounded soldiers. Guy Kay fans should recognize my reference to its use in a very emotional scene in Fionavar. I was not aware of the monastic meaning; I think the Benedictines who educated me were not much into rumpus. Well done, Sally, and over to you for the next round!
Special props to brightcopy for clue #8, which brought up some funny memories.

Any time. FWIW, I have never heard of misericorde. Learning is fun.

Related to construction/renovation rather than gardening: Combine wood chips, sawmill shavings and sawdust with a little solvent and you will have particleboard!
Congrats Sally! Have fun!

Nice.
Four syllables is hard to figure out with only the last one.
(This coming from the guy who chose "permute"...)
