The Orange Prize has officially secured a sponsor - Baileys cream liqueur. Beginning in 2014 the prize will be known as the Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction. Read about it HERE.

I'll toast to that!

As long as they don't produce an orange Baileys to celebrate the name change. The original's palatable, but that mint version was extremely foul.

Blech... it'll always be Orange to me.

This partnership is only for three years. Is it possible that, in 2016, there will be a new sponsor, and the name of the prize will change again?

Ditto that! (love me some Baileys, especially Baileys Cheesecake!)

But as with bucket it will ALWAYS be the ORANGE to me.

It is now past midnight Eastern time; I wonder if they've announced the winner.....

A major reason why I have disdain for corporate sponsorship. Whether it's awards or buildings or sporting events or whatever. Give the thing a name, and then if you must tack you corporate name on it because that's a reality of life, then so be it. But always have that base name that doesn't change.

(Until it lost its sponsorship, I didn't now the Orange Prize was a corporate name, since we don't have Orange whatever here in western Canada).

I hope that the name will be changed when a new sponsor is found. Personally I don't care for Bailey's, but I read it is the " hen party " of liquors. Oh well. At least it has a sponsor. Maybe next time we can have the Jack Daniels Women's Prize for Literature.

It will always be the Orange Prize to me - until they get a better " name."

How about the Grand Marnier Women's Prize for Literature?

Further to what I said in post #7 -- a corporate name should only be tacked on to the prize/award/etc. name, and never the whole name itself -- I need to add something.

I've seen some fairly negative comments about the Bailey's name and sponsorship elsewhere on LT. Personally, I'm neutral about Bailey's as a product--don't have a problem with it at all, but they don't make any money off of me either. That said, THANK YOU very much, Bailey's Corp, for sponsoring this award! Without your corporate sponsorship, this award might fade away, and with it all our hours of talking about the books and the writers, and all those hours of good reading. So thank you, thank you, thank you, for stepping up!

In light of this being a women's writer award that promotes books that are commonly read at book clubs, I think an obvious sponsor would have either been a wine maker, or a cheese & crackers company. Perhaps the Louis Latour Prize? The Yellowtail Women's Award for Fiction? Kraft Tells You What to Read Award?

I too, am very grateful that Baileys stepped up to the plate and are sponsoring the Prize.
I am also very grateful for all those who this year gave so that we could have our lists, books, & prize this year. It would have been so sad had this needed to lapse for 2013.

I'm happy with any sponsor who will step up to the plate an sponsor "The Orange Prize". Orange is/ was a telecommunications company in the UK, if memory serves.
