Hi Everyone,

I recently landed a job as a professor as a college out here in San Diego and I have been tasked with creating a new course. Of course I decided on creating "World History Through the Graphic Novel 1900-Present." I hope to roll it out in October, but I need a little help. What are some graphic novels that you think HAVE to be on the syllabus? And do you know of any books about teaching graphic novels?

Thank you so much!

The Complete Maus: A Survivor's Tale by Art Spiegelman will be beyond essential for your students. They might also find Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' Watchmen to be an interesting commentary on American international relations from the era of the John F. Kennedy administration to the mid-1980s.

Some texts that might be useful to you:

- Understanding Comics - Scott McCloud
- Comics & Sequential Art - Will Eisner
- 100 Graphic Novels for Public Libraries - Steve Weiner

Thank you for the fantastic recommendations! I read McCloud's and it was very helpful in the lesson planning process. I know that Maus is a must, but I am going to check out Watchmen because I think that would fit in perfectly.
